  • [Jean-Pierre Desrochers] “I look for an external HDMI video capture device that would be firewire/Vegas compatible.”

It looks like the device that you found should do what you want. Vegas Pro should see it as an HDV camera can capture it’s output.

[Jean-Pierre Desrochers] “I’m so disapointed the technology is that limited with such devices for specific task.. They go on the moon but there are no HDMI to HDV firewire devices available to buy anywhere.”

That’s because no one is using the HDV format anymore. Most people abandoned tape-based formats several years ago and so you won’t see any new HDV devices.

[Jean-Pierre Desrochers] “I must be a martian with too dificult needs..”

No, you are just looking for something that no one else needs or wants anymore. There are better ways of acquiring from HDMI.

[Jean-Pierre Desrochers] “Maybe a should have choose another type of editor than Vegas.. Maybe another video editor soft would accept many more types of HD capture devices..”

Vegas Pro supports AJA Io Express, KONA 3x, LH, LHe, LHi, LS, or LSe SDI cards or the Blackmagic Design HD Extreme, Intensity Pro, or HD Extreme 3D SDI cards. That’s a fairly long list of devices. Most people who have access to 1920×080 HDMI don’t want to capture it as 1440×1080 HDV because you loose horizontal resolution in the process.

If you don’t want an internal card the Blackmagic Intensity is a USB device but it has very specific motherboard requirements and doesn’t work with any Dell computers. You would also have to capture with their software and then just edit with Vegas Pro.

April 1, 2016 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Render 4K with Transparency with VP12?

[Tim Neighbors] “Will I be able to if I upgrade to VP13?”

Yes! Vegas Pro 13.0 supports 4K QuickTime renders using the Animation or PNG codecs, both of which carry an Alpha channel.

Do you have any Codec Packs installed? (e.g., K-Lite) These have been know to crash Vegas when rendering.

    +1

You need a planner tracker for this kind of work. CoreMelt Track-X with the Perspective Tracking option should do the trick.

I’m not aware of 16GB modules for the iMac 5K but since it maxes out at 32GB it doesn’t matter if you use 2 x 16 GB or 4 x 8 GB. Since it has 4 memory slots, I would just get 4 x 8 GB because those will probably be cheaper.

March 30, 2016 at 1:49 am in reply to: 3D Model integration with Vegas Pro

[Craig Meeks] “Talking about 3D models into Sony Vegas Pro. So what would be the difference between rendering a png sequence and rendering a .avi file with alpha channel?”

The PNG sequence would probably take up less disk space because the only way to get an alpha channel in an AVI file is to render Uncompressed which produces very large files. The PNG sequence also allows you to control the frame rate easier because you can tell Vegas Pro to interpret the sequence at whatever frame rate you need. Otherwise, there is no real difference. The QuickTime Animation codec is another good alternative. It is actually designed for animation with an alpha channel.

  • [Paul Godard] “Ideally I would like to find one that can power the mike (phantom) from the Nikon DSLR to avoid another batteries… but it does not seem to be a standard item… Any idea?”

Yea, if you are really concerned with getting great audio, you might want to pick up the Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder for DSLR. This will not only give you phantom power but will probably record higher quality audio than your camera. I have one and it works great. It attaches right to the bottom of your camera between the camera and your tripod. You can link the audio with the video using FCP X built-in Synchronize Clips function.

  • [Paul Godard] “I did try that but again the volume goes down a lot although the meter stay at the same level and weird still on both L & R, although mono2 is no ticked!”

Mono has no concept of left and right. Left and right are stereo concepts. Mono audio, when feed into a stereo bus will play equally out of both speakers. You can, of course, pan a mono signal to the left or right once placed in a stereo signal path, but mono all by itself plays through all speakers equally if you don’t change it’s path otherwise.
