Hi guys. Am about to buy a iMac 5K with 4GHz processor and 1 TB SSD. I want to get memory upgrade from OWC. Want to bump up the stock memory to 32GB. Is there any difference between getting 2 x 16GB and 4 x 8GB? I’ll be running PrPro, FCP X, Motion, Resolve mainly:) A bit of AE too:)
Thanks for all the help, in advance:)

I’m not aware of 16GB modules for the iMac 5K but since it maxes out at 32GB it doesn’t matter if you use 2 x 16 GB or 4 x 8 GB. Since it has 4 memory slots, I would just get 4 x 8 GB because those will probably be cheaper.

The newest iMac systems can take 64GB of RAM. Kits are sold here:

I’d recommend the 2 x 16GB sticks, that way you could keep two of the sticks that will ship from Apple in the machine, giving you more than 32GB of RAM. Or, if you don’t want to mix RAM, it will still leave 2 open slots if you wanted to go to 64GB in the future.

I just picked one up (refurb, through Apple).

I went with the 27 inch with the upgraded i7 processor, upgraded graphics card (4GB 395x), and a 512GB SSD. It’s a fantastic little machine. I still need to buy more RAM for it (it came with 16GB), but so far I’ve been incredibly happy with it.

    I highly recommend it.
