I haven’t used the Colormunki, but I’ve been using the Datacolor Spyder3Pro for several years and it works great. I’ve calibrated my 24″ Cinema Display, 24″ ASUS ProArt display, and MacBook Pro display with it and the colors are very accurate across all of them. The Spyder5Pro is the current version and it looks to be around the same price range that you are looking for.

  • You’re welcome. It’s always best to render each and see how smoothly Vegas Pro can edit them because some .TS files edit fine while others have problems but, in general, a .TS should be fine.

  • Your comments in the screen captures seem to indicate that are already aware of the trade-off.

Option 1 would be the best tradeoff between quality and file size as long as Vegas Pro will edit the files smoothly. It should since they are MPEG-2 Transport Streams. I would test it out just to be sure.

Option 2 is probably overkill although it is lossless and you’re correct, you need to install a codec to use them. The question is whether or not Vegas Pro will perform well with that codec? Again you need to try and see.

Option 3 might give you the most problems. Vegas Pro is very particular about what MP4 files it can edit smoothly and also, as you are aware, it is the lowest quality of the three choices for editing although 16MB AVC/H.264 is Blu-ray quality so it’s not that bad.

I would use Option 1 as long as Vegas Pro doesn’t have a problem editing the files.

April 7, 2016 at 1:45 pm in reply to: how can i send a project?

[Wayne Waag] “…the easiest thing is to create a new folder and then do a project “save as” to that folder, making sure that the “Copy media with project” box is ticked. In this way all of your source media will be copied to the same folder, making it much easier for someone else to open your project and do a render.”

    +1

…and depending on the size of your media, you may need to buy a portable drive to send to your friend because your project will probably be too big to send via any other means.

Yea, if you have 4 clean corners to track and they never leave the frame or become obscured by other objects, the point tracker will work fine. The CoreMelt plug-ins contain the Mocha tracker which is a Planar Tracker which is more capable than a simple point tracker but a point tracker will work if you have clean points to track and it’s built into Motion.

Try this tutorial. I believe it will show you exactly what you need to know:

    [Stefan Schramm] “I’m using a Quadcore Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31220 @ 3.10GHz, 3101 MHz with 8G of RAM.”

That’s quite an old CPU from back in 2011 that doesn’t support hyper threading so you have 4 cores with only 4 threads. The Passmark score is 6117 so it’s not a powerful system by today’s standards. In fact, it’s not very fast back in it’s day. By comparison, my 2010 Mac Pro’s Intel Xeon X5670 @ 2.93GHz benchmark at 12749. I’m just saying this to give you perspective. An Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.30GHz is more powerful than your Xeon and I would always recommend at least a Core i7 for working with AVCHD because it has 4 core with 8 threads. Decoding AVCHD requires all the CPU power you can throw at it.

[Stefan Schramm] “The AVCHD files come from a Panasonic ‘prosumer’ camcorder, HDC-SD300.”

This can also add to the difficulty in decoding. While other manufacturers supported the H.264 Main-Profile Level 4.1, Panasonic stuck with Level 4.0. I’m not sure what Vegas Pro has been optimized for which is why I made the statement “I’ve stuck with Sony cameras” because I know those file formats get tested and H.264 is such a huge specification that no software can support it all. Sony and Panasonic don’t exactly have a close relationship and Vegas Pro has always been slow to support Panasonic formats but Vegas Pro 12.0 should be find with them.

[Stefan Schramm] “I’ve never converted anything around here, because we always shoot on a Sony EX1R which of course works just like that. Is this something that can be done within Vegas? I’m pretty much stuck here at work with what we’ve got and do not have access to add apps to the system.”

I would say it’s time for a new, more powerful, computer if you want to work with AVCHD or keep using the Sony EX1R if you can’t upgrade. In the mean time, you might want to convert the AVCHD footage to Sony MXF so that it plays back smoother. Just place the AVCHD files on the timeline and render to Sony MXF HD422 or even the XDCAM format that the EX1R uses. You can even use the Batch Render script that comes with Vegas Pro to place all of the AVCHD files on the timeline, manually create regions around each clip, and batch render the regions to separate files.

[Robin S. Kurz] “I’d say using it in FCP is much easier anyway and you don’t lose any functionality or options.”

Agreed. Very easy to use in FCP X.
