Compressor 4 is still a 32 bit app.
You can actually “rent” adobe CS6 through Creative Cloud. There are monthly rates.

As a long time avid and FCP user, the Smart Tool struck me as odd, as well. Never really use it in Avid, despite my FCP experience. Just always seemed like I was more efficient doing things the original Avid way.
The Smart Tool Doesn’t really mimic FCP behavior and js just plain clunky and weird within the Avid editing paradigm….and now FCP is dead…FCPX is totally different! -
Open the audio tool and make sure your output is set to stereo and not direct or mono.

Yes, it still comes with Avid FX 6, but it sounds like you forgot to install it.

Pretty sure the Avid MediaFiles folder, where all your footage and pre computes are stored needs to be at the root level of a volume. so the best you can do is to keep your project on the same volume. If you don’t want the footage mixed with other projects in the same MediaFiles folder, When you start a new project, you can increment the number of your footage folder up to a higher number(Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1) and MC will start a new one at number 1. This will keep everything separate. You have to be real careful with this, if you bounce between projects, but it can work.
The question is why do you want to bypass the Media Tool..which is designed to deal with all this and is better suited to deal with the way Avid manages files. It’s a bit like wanting to repair your car and refusing to use a screwdriver.
Avid is not FCP7. The reason media management is more solid in Avid than other NLEs, is its database and file system. It’s rigid, but its very reliable. If you try to go your own way, you are asking for chaos.
(This applies to “traditional” Avid managed media. AMA media can be managed more like FCP, but not surprisingly, it’s more temperamental. I avoid editing with AMA…just use it for selects, then transcode to Avid media)

They’ve been working on this for at least a year. Ive only just stepped into the job. I doubt he had much, if anything to do with it…but who knows.

I’m used to working with tape..which won’t allow that…but with file based sources that’s a cool workflow improvement.

Create a temporary PAL project.
Import the file into that (or AMA/transcode).Close the temporary project.
Open the bin from the PAL project from your 1080i59.94 project. Edit your clip into your sequence. Note that it has a Motion Adapter applied,
If you are happy with the quality of the on-the-fly conversion, you are done.
If not, you can promote the Motion Adapter to a Timewarp effect in the Motion Effect Editor, and try the Blended Interpolates or Fluid Frame (long render time) setting.
If your SD Pal footage is not 16:9, you may have to add a reformat effect to it.

Yes. I have noticed,this as well.
For this reason, we render everything with text as QuickTime , even if its a still. All text is crisp that way,
I think there is something wrong importing stills with text/alpha channel in Avid. Tried all three settings for field order and nothing fixes it.
