    It’s because FCP is seeing the rendered files, not your original files.

    Edit: Misread your post, Thumbnail cache is likely your problem.

    What is your project frame rate? It could be a 23.976 / 24 fps difference between you and the sound mixer.

    I haven’t stabilized in imovie, but have always had great results in FCP. If the footage is really shaky, it’s best to dial down the settings very low and only gently smooth it out a little. Trying to stabilize footage that has a lot of large movements and motion blur is going to look strange irregardless of the program if you try and make it rock solid.

    I’ve always been satisfied with just mpeg streamclip or component in from a DVD player. Haven’t been blown away by any of the up-converter plug-ins, but most have a trial so you can see for yourself. If the quality of the DVD footage is good, it will hold up. If the archival is 4×3 and the end product is 16×9, consider pillar boxing instead od blowing it up to fill the widescreen.

    Thanks Flip — that was it. I’ve never used nor needed a difference matte before so I was trying to go around the hard way.
