  • ‘media offline’ but still viewable ?

Posted by Brendan Tyler on April 5, 2011 at 10:41 pm

    Hi

I’m currently going over various drives, importing FCP projects for some much needed ‘housekeeping’ (media management and re exporting)

Having come across several poorly saved projects (pilot error, my mistake) I have reconnected what I could whilst ‘skipping’ over the missing footage files.

However, despite appearing as ugly big red ‘Media Offline’ banners within my timeline + the viewer box (and crossed through in the browser) – the entire sequence is still viewable, in its entirety, within the canvas window

Can somebody please explain to me the following :

    why this is possible ?

Is there anyway at all I can re-save this ‘complete’ version somehow and / or export these complete versions ?

    * Have tried exporting as it is but this then shows the ‘Media Offline’ banners throughout …

All replies and any advice would be very welcome

    Thanks in advance …

    B

It’s no longer offline, you’re just seeing the thumbnails that suggest they are offline. So, trash the thumbnail cache… You can find it by searching with spotlight.

It’s because FCP is seeing the rendered files, not your original files.

Edit: Misread your post, Thumbnail cache is likely your problem.

Thank you for your advice, but I’m still having difficulty.

Turning on the FCP project, it begins with a warning box stating that

“Some files went offline – Some of the media your project references have either changed, moved, or gone away. You can either reconnect these files, or continue with them being online”

I can no longer find the corresponding files to reconnect so I have to choose continue which leaves the big ‘Media Offline’ clips throughout the sequence.

I’ve found the final cut thumbnail cache and trashed them, but am still left in the same position as before : having a sequence that is missing sequences on the timeline (with corresponding red line through the thumbnail list top left)

What is so frustrating is that somehow the project is still able to be viewed in its entirety but only in the canvas box – have you anymore suggestions please ?

    Many thanks …

Then Johnny was most likely correct, your sequence is most likely referencing the render files, and that’s why you’re still able to view in the canvas. You’d better export a self contained Quicktime ASAP so you have a reference copy of what on the timeline, or you could find yourself in big trouble.

You may have to recapture your missing later, or in a worse case scenario recut using the above mentioned self contained file as a reference.

    Hi

That’s great ! at least I will get to save a version of it.

The quality isn’t fantastic – is there a QT self contained setting you could recommend that I use ?

Not to worry if not and thanks again (to you both) for your feedback, much appreciated …

EDIT : It’s ok, if I change it to any other setting I loose the ‘missing’ footage clips from my sequence, thanks
