Ref. mail about disappearing Video Event thumbnails – did you solve this?

If no-one else gets what you’re on about Bruce, I do and it’s really getting on my nerves! I’ve never had this problem before either, but I’m working on our new 64bit Windows 7 machine and the thumnails on the tracks keep vanishing – so it’s difficult to navigate around the timeline with a load of white boxes.

Is this something to do with Apple Quicktime? The files causing me grief are coming off a Canon 5D MkII. They work and edit fine on our XP machines.

I’ve already discovered that Quicktime is running half-cocked on 64 bit PC’s – could this be the problem? Interestingly it’s not happening all the time. This suggests that it could be some sort of Service failing – we’ve had this problem with a Wacom tablet which keeps ‘vanishing’ from the system under Windows 7.

    Any ideas out there…?

    Hi Steve(et al),

If anyone picks up this thread I’ve spent nearly a day trying to sort this out. Clearly a common issue, there may be lots of different causes but I’ve found a solution that worked for me – so here it is:

Firstly, Sony are obviously aware of this issue and there’s a detailed answer from the horses mouth here:

    https://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/prnt_adp.php?p_faqid=1382&p_created=1147269571&p_sid=Sx-CSvzj&p_redirect=&p_li=

Sadly however none of this worked for me, but at least it’s kept me in a derkened room with a PC all day – at least I won’t have been prematurely aged by the UV from the beautiful sunny day outside!

The cure turned out to be simple: Download Vegas Pro 9.0 – it loads perfectly and runs fine. If you alreday have 8.0 the upgrade cost is worth it just to save you the hassle.

    Cheers,

    JM

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for getting back about this.

I’ve been trying to figure out what’s caused the problem but without much luck. The last restore point that wants to play ball is still showing the same problem. I’m not sure how to identify the offending audio driver glitch – nothing shows flagged in my system and the machine will play music quite happily through Window Media Player, so there are clearly drivers in there working OK at some level.

The machine this is happening on is a DELL Precision 670 – so I’ve been on their site to download the integrated sound drivers; still no joy.

Any suggestions of how to track this problem down?

    Regards,

    JM

    Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time for your detailed reply – it was appreciated.

By the sound of it the 2-pass VBR will probably be the best bet for my projects. We’re hoping to put in one of the new Core i7 machines soon, so the extra time taken to run the second pass shouldn’t be too noticeable.

Bless you Mike. Quite right – I’d already looked in there and missed it!
