Thanks for the feedback. You would think that once an alpha is generated (resulting from the key), that matte can be nested with BCC Drop Shadow to create a shadow. The limitation appears to be that Avid is not passing off the alpha to other effects.

There’s a tutorial I wrote on the BCC Film Process filter. The filter comes with presets that will give you the look you want, or at least get you in the ballpark and you can tweak from there:

Yeah, I have also seen Premiere (2.0 and CS3) behave erratically and unpredicatably with large media like HDV, especially longer clips. That’s why one of the questions I asked was how long your clip was, your sequence, etc. That said, it may not all be Adobe and that is why we are paying close attention to reports like this so we can rectify any bugginess as it happens.
Thanks for the update and let us know if anything else out of the ordinary happens.

September 21, 2007 at 3:24 pm in reply to: BCC 5.0.1 Crashes PPro CS3 Renders and AME Won’t WorkHello,
This is John from Boris FX QA. Boris asked me to reply to the thread here concerning this crashing bug. We have not been able to reproduce the crash in PP CS3 based on the information provided to us. That does not mean it is not happening, it just means we may not have an identical test environment as you do. In order to investigate further, we would need to know a few things about this scenario that is causing you problems:
1) Which HDV Adobe preset is affected, or is it all of them (HDV 1080i25, HDV 1080i30, HDV 1080p25, HDV 1080p30, HDV 720p25, HDV 720p30)?
2) How long is the clip in question?
3) Is the clip that the filter is applied to in the middle of a long sequence? If so, how long is the sequence?
4) Is the BCC Rays Puffy filter applied to the clip by itself or stacked with other BCC or native Adobe filters?
5) Which version of BCC 5 are you using? (e.g. Beta, ESD, BCC 5.0 or BCC 5.0.1)
6) Are you rendering in High, Draft or Auto quality?
To expedite this faster, please send me your project at johnl@borisfx.com. If you want to include your media, please let me know you are doing so and ftp it to:

Thanks again for the heads up and for your time. We will do our best to resolve this issue.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Mark-
That’s good news that you are planning to do some podcast stuff on Boris FX.
Ron had asked me if I was interested or if I knew anyone interested in being a “go-to” Boris person for this. Good luck with that.I’m sure FCP / Boris workflow techniques would make a good podcast? Any ideas you have in mind?
Best,John

Thanks for the comment, Kentwolf. I can’t speak for others who have written tutorials for Boris, but the three I just wrote are using the Red 4 Engine and not the plugin. I agree that tutorials should not focus on a particular host unless there is demand for them or a particular workflow needs to be emphasized.

Thanks for all the input. We are aware of the need for more “practical” oriented tutorials at Boris, and we will try to accomodate that need in the near future.
How to efficiently use Red transitions in FCP is a good suggestion, in fact, I bounced that idea off of one of our FCP experts here and he expressed an interest in writing it. In the meantime, feel free to check out Red’s new online HTML help system. There’s a section in the Red 4 User Guide called “Quick Starts” that can get you started using Red in certain host applications, including transitions in FCP.
If you’re interested in learning the new Motion Path filter, I am in discussions with the Cow to post a tutorial on how to use it to fly a CG jet plane. It’s a really cool tutorial that I think you will all like. Other tutorials currently in the works: How to use the new Color Match filter and How to Apply and customize a New Lower Third graphic.
I’ll keep you posted on where to look for our tutorials as we release them. …And, don’t forget to check out some new video tutorials here if you haven’t done so yet: https://www.borisfx.com/products/red4/tutorials/

It’s a shame to hear that, and it is not the first time I’ve heard a story like this. Unfortunately, there are training centers out there that are only concerned with the bottom line, making money. These facilities I’m talking about tend to charge a premium and only teach you where the buttons are without really emphasizing important issues like workflow, techniques and how the product will integrate into your digital pipeline.
There are very good facilities, too. The trick is finding one that is just as passionate to teach you as you are to learn. Anne Renehan, who responded to your post, is a good resource for training contacts.

John
