What works with FCP – probably all of them. They are simply backgrounds on top of which you key the talent. Just make sure the aspect ratio of the set fits the format you’re using. A 4×3 background won’t work the way you want in a 16×9 sequence. However, a 16×9 background might work for 4×3 (you’d use an appropriate 4×3 area of the larger 16×9 background).

As for which to use? Pick the ones that look the way you want. I’m sure some of the virtual set companies have free or trial backgrounds you can experiment with.

I’m assume you intend to use a green screen to put your talent “on the set.” In that case, consider using Motion’s keyer rather than FCP’s, or purchase a third-party keyer. You’ll find many recommendations by searching the Cow.

How are you recording? Explain what kind of mic, how’s it plugged in, etc. Lagging often happens and is called latency. Some programs have a setting that affects latency. In some cases there’s nothing you can do.

What kind of distortion are you hearing? Distortion is not related to latency. Since the distortion is not recorded it’s probably in your monitor circuit. How are you monitoring the sound?

What Mark said. Isolate areas with mattes and adjust each key to that area’s particular challenges. And be sure to feather the edges. You may end up with many instances of the keyer.
Note that Motion includes a lite version of the Primatte keyer. While it’s not as powerful as the Pro version, IMHO it’s better than FCP’s keyer.

I agree with Rafael. Use PhotoJEPG 75% if you can. It’s a 4:2:2 codec and fairly compact.

Another thought is if you can play a sequence in real time you can play out to a DVD recorder. The quality won’t be the same as using Compressor & DVDSP but it might speed up your workflow.

Get the most power you can afford. The iMac may limit your options down the road. As for drives, while you can RAID three drives inside your enclosure, an external array will in most cases provide greater storage, speed and data safety. There are terrific options in the left and right banner ads.

FCP expects audio with a sample rate of 48kHz. Some cameras record audio with a sample rate of 32kHz. You can try changing the sequence settings > audio settings > rate to 32k and see if that helps.
