    Audio should always be PCM (aiff) 48k 16/24 bit. Using QT Player, VLC Player or other external player, does the audio play OK?

    I think most folks would say the Teranex is the best hardware approach followed closely by Kona 3. Not sure if Teranex works with a file-based workflow. Kona doesn’t. You’d have to use Compressor (or other software) to up-convert. The reason to go with hardware is it will be superior quality compared to software up-rezing DVCAM.

    I haven’t used ProRes 422LT. I normally use 422, but I’ve read LT is close to 422. The best thing you can do is burn a short clip using each and decide if you can see a difference.

    As for your conversion strategy I’d capture the HDV as ProRes and convert the 5D footage to the same format. What frame rate was the 5D set to?

    Canon’s about to release a plugin for FCP to more easily transfer the footage. I’m not sure if this plugin is available yet, but when it is it’ll make what you’re trying to do much easier.

    Have you trashed prefs and repaired permissions? Also, running Disk Warrior might help. It will help folks help you if you tell us what computer, OS, version FCP, type of drives used for capture, etc.

    The closer you get the mic is to the talent’s mouth the lower the ambient sounds will be in relation to the voice. However, you will still hear some background ambience. Does the audience see that the person’s outside? What about the cows? If they see them, they’ll accept the sound of them. If for some reason you absolutely need to eliminate all ambient sounds you’ll have to do ADR in post.

    Prefs periodically get corrupted by normal operations. It’s the first thing I do when FCP starts acting strangely. Trash first, then repair permissions.
