If I were doing this with Apple Color, the first thing I’d try to do is create a mask based on the exact color of the blue lettering then apply a glow effect. IMHO, this approach is much easier with moving footage as it eliminates the need to track and rotoscope the blue, particularly, as it intersects blocking elements of the sign. I’ve never thought to try a similar approach in AfterFX, but maybe a color key would work similarly.

An advantage of using ProRes is it will play in RT in FCP in a ProRes sequence (ie. no rendering) where Animation will have to be rendered. ProRes is a very good-looking compressed format. You’ll have to decide if you see a difference between it and the Animation codec which, as Dave points out is lossless.

What about the AJA Ki Pro? It’s probably more expensive, but will accept almost any kind of camera input. I believe it only records to ProRes.

I doubt it’s your video card. The lack of video is usually related to the lack of a codec. Go to the Apple site and see if Express will play XDCAM footage. Or Google “Final Cut Express and XDCAM” and see what pops up.

Sounds like you’re missing the codec for that flavor of XDCAM. Have you edited XDCAM with Express before? I know FCP can handle it, but I’m not sure if Express can.

The main differences between the cards are the Hi has HDMI in/out, SD to HD up conversion, HD to HD cross conversion. If you think you’ll never need those capabilities (now or in the future), then the He would work.

That may have been an Easy Setup that came with our Kona. You should be able to make a custom Easy Setup that’ll work. I’m not at my office or I’d copy the details of that setup. Perhaps someone else can do that.
