  • Issues with with transferred files from a Sony ex3

Posted by Andy Morman on April 10, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    Hello,

I have a cinematographer friend who has given me footage from his Sony ex3 camera that he shot for a video the non-profit I work for is editing. He transferred them as .mov files.

I am working with with a MacBook (2GHz) and running Snow Leopard. I have Quicktime 10.0, XDCAM EX Clip Browser 2.6, and Final Cut Express 4.0.

When I go to play to play the files in FCE and QuickTime all I am getting is audio. The video is blank.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you’re missing the codec for that flavor of XDCAM. Have you edited XDCAM with Express before? I know FCP can handle it, but I’m not sure if Express can.

I have not worked with this quality of file before. Is it possible that it is a video card issue in my MacBook?

I doubt it’s your video card. The lack of video is usually related to the lack of a codec. Go to the Apple site and see if Express will play XDCAM footage. Or Google “Final Cut Express and XDCAM” and see what pops up.

You’re missing the XDCAM EX codecs and FCE does not have them, only FCP. You can test and buy a QT plug-in from Calibrated Software that allows you to view XDCAM EX video without FCP but I don’t know if you can then edit in FCE. Check it out here:
