I’d add one thing to Will’s excellent step-by-step. Compare the folder size on your hard drive to the size of the P2 card you just copied. They should be the same (Sometimes they vary slightly due to the different formatting of Mac and P2 drives). Also, I always play back a few seconds of each clip on the hard drive before formatting the P2 – just to be absolutely sure everything’s okay. Remember, the data IS your show. Be careful with it. BTW there are excellent programs like Shotput P2 that semi-automate the off-loading of P2 cards and do a byte-by-byte verification. I use it all the time.

The audio should be 48kHz, 16 or 24 bit PCM. You should use an external program like Soundtrack Pro or QT Pro to convert your 44.1kHz audio to the above specs. Then import that track and merge to your video. Then, when you look at it, it shouldn’t be showing iTunes, and the audio specs should appear properly lower in the properties window.

It shows some of the problems that can occur while shooting outside with bright skys and how to improve the footage. Obviously, correcting as much as possible during the shoot, as Mark has explained, is the best idea.

Recording to the camera is a good idea as John says. 16 or 24 bit, 48kHz sample rate, PCM are the settings to use. Most NLEs are happy with both wav and aiff. PluralEyes is an excellent program, but if you slate each take, syncing shouldn’t be a problem. I suggest you run some tests before your first shoot with the Zoom to confirm your workflow.

Normally it takes us around 12 min to offload a 16GB card with verification – around 8 min without. Jeremy is absolutely correct about the transfer being slowed down to the speed of the slowest drive. That happened to us once.

I’ve used them on shoots with no problems. But it’s always been in benign locations – not in areas with lots of possible interference. Sennheiser has a link to the FCC frequency database on their site so you can find vacant or little used frequencies. It searches the region of the zip code you enter.
