I tried two different eSATA cards – one from LaCie and one from Addonics, but experienced kernel panics with both. I suspect the Silicon Image Sil3132 driver for the controller chip was the cause, as it is currently on the list of incompatible software @: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258.

Apple does offer the following RocketRAID eSATA card (ready for Snow Leopard) at the store:
