Final Cut 7 Crashes Computer w/Snow Leopard
Posted by Bill Paris on September 4, 2009 at 2:28 amJust installed Snow Leopard on my 8 Core Intel G5 with Kona 3 Card (8 gigs Ram). Installed the Kona 3 Snow Leopard upgrade….. The computer crashes when I try to open FCP 7.
Any ideas?

Sure…
Did you do a clean install from the ground up of both SL and FCS3?
You might need to. However, before doing so, try fixing permissions with Apple Disk Utility. And, if you have it, try running Disk Warrior on your system drive, from the master disc of course.

September 4, 2009 at 4:45 amDavid,
Thanks for your response……. i fixed the permissions on the system drive and the computer and all applications(including FCP) would run with everything unplugged. My 5TB ESATA raid seems to be the problem now. When I try to open FCP with the raid connected the system crashes. I tried to “repair” the drives using the disk utility, but the computer keeps crashing. According to the literature I have on the drives (PROMAX SATAMAX) there are no drivers needed. I’m perplexed since the drives were humming along before I installed Snow Leopard.
I also tried to run Disk Warrior ……. it did not see my raid. The raid does show up when finder is launched.
Any ideas? Thanks!

September 4, 2009 at 2:52 pmDoes your RAID show up in Disk Utility? I suspect not, since DW didn’t pick it up. If that’s the case, can you see the eSATA card and/or RAID in System Profiler? If the card is there but not the storage, you may need an updated driver for the card, or a new compatible card. I would also try reseating your eSATA card.

September 4, 2009 at 11:10 pmHi Guys,
Thanks again for responding to my post with such great suggestions and information. I talked with the folks at ProMax …. (They’re support guys are great these days!) apparently the drivers for the ESATA card are not compatible with Snow Leopard, so It’s been recommended to go back to Leopard and wait for the updates via the CAL DIGIT. Sounds simple enough …… had to learn the hard way not to be a BETA tester with my edit system that was working perfectly! Especially when I’m up to my elbows in projects …… live and learn! Thanks again for the help!

October 25, 2009 at 6:29 pmI tried two different eSATA cards – one from LaCie and one from Addonics, but experienced kernel panics with both. I suspect the Silicon Image Sil3132 driver for the controller chip was the cause, as it is currently on the list of incompatible software @: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258.
Apple does offer the following RocketRAID eSATA card (ready for Snow Leopard) at the store:

Anyone had success with this card?
