    Bret,

I am so happy to share the news that your suggestion to copy the library to an external drive worked flawlessly. The night I received the space limit notice the installed Clean My Mac app, in addition to posting to the forum I ordered next day air a 4TB Western Digital Passport drive from Amazon. I watched several videos outlining the procedure which included information about all of the safeguards and follow-up remediation steps (relinking media files, etc.).

Through my research, I also learned that users can free up tons of space by deleting render and optimized media files if used. I tested the delete generated media option within FCP on the initial bloated file and it went from 550 GB down to 100 or so. Thanks to your suggestions I now have a setup and more optimized workflow. I want to thank you for your empathetic spirit. Your support was a lifesaver.

    Kind Regards,

    John Easton

    Interesting…

For this particular engagement the source video was not shot by a camera, rather the media is a web video interview (mp4. H.264 codec) captured via a web conferencing tool (Zoom.us). In this instance would native media slow the editing process at all (rendering effects, final output rendering, etc)?

Regarding the number of libraries, I created a single library because each so-called “projects” within the library are all related sharing a lot of the media (graphics, audio, images, bumpers, overlays, etc.). Each of the media assets is tagged/named so locating them has been a breeze. My logic up front was that I would save time by avoiding having to load the same files for 50 some odd individual “projects”. I wasn’t aware there was potential for the size of the library to grow so much.

    Hello Bret,

Thank you again for the prompt response. I am awaiting delivery of a 4TB drive to continue the project I will certainly share the outcome.

I have a related move forward media management question. Just doing the math (current state: 6 projects/600GB library size = 100 GB per project). Because I have 50 projects for this engagement even a 4TB won’t hold it all. My thinking is that render files, file optimization wrappers, backups, etc. add a lot of bloat to the fcpx file structure. Given this fact, what suggestions might you have for an optimal space management workflow? Once the client approves an individual video, deleting all associated runtime created files for the individual project?

    Thank you yet again!

    Hello Bret,

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I have seen a number of videos and read a few articles that cover creating a new library on an external drive but nothing in detail for those who made my mistake and later need to migrate all of their assets externally. I have a couple of questions (below)

    • If I choose to drag the library file option, will I still need to delete the original file from my HD?
    • What happens to the Cache files once I consolidate? These files are really big 300GB in my case
    • After the consolidation would I need to delete files from my local drive or is local removal part of the consolidation process? I have heard dragging the file simply makes a copy leaving the original files in place which requires manual deletion.

Thank you sooo much. This community and you specifically are both an invaluable resource. I am going to try your fix as soon as my new HD comes in tomorrow.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my inquiry. Steve, I did a search before posting but did not come up with any good ideas. This is not to say there were not any related ideas but as with much written Internet communication, the authors did not take the time to write clearly; so I was not able to discern the authors’ point.

    Thank you again,

    John
