Thanks again guys for the input. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you can’t keep 720p 23.98 footage native when going to tape. The DVCPRO HD deck can be set to 720p 23.98 and you can set the Kona output to match but and it’s a big BUT, you cannot record to tape at that frequency. At least I can’t.
Shane if you look closely at the DVCPRO HD VFR settings, the video output is 59.94 not 23.98. So, I can’t seem to retain the 23.98fps.
Doing a pulldown and adding frames, etc. can be a problem dependent on the content of the video. It can create a host of artifacting, aliasing
and other issues.
VFR may be a solution when downconverting to SD. Thanks for that suggestion.

Thanks for responding. To try and be more clear. I can’t work with the clips in there current native format to layoff to tape, view it on a monitor or send that signal out of the Kona via SDI to downconvert to SD. Just to name a few. As stated I can upconvert to 1080i 23.98 via the Kona with no rendering. Can also use any number of hardware encoders to accomplish that as well.
The request from our last client was to make a SD DVD with a window burn. I had to render the clip to 720p59.94 in order to get any signal output. Then do the downconvert to SD. I was sending the converted signal to a set top DVD recorder. So, not crunching it in Compressor or doing a real time encode using Sonic.
No issue being able to edit the footage in it’s native format.
Output to anything at 720p 23.98 seems to be the issue.
Haven’t tried encoding a blu-ray at the rate yet.

No, never fixed it. I have donkey workarounds. Basically, with edit to tape window open, scrub until your blacked tape is where you want it. In my case generally 00:58:30:00. That allows for my minute of bars and 30 secs black, program starting at hour 1. Usually, FCP’s timecode will be a few seconds/frames off.
Just use the “mark in” button in the edit to tape window. Drag your sequence into assemble edit and there ya go!
The other option is to just crash record.

Deck control is not the issue. I have deck control. Every function works with the exception of being able to type in a timecode value when using a 1920:1080 23.98psf setting.
