I love the fusion drive. I feels like in real world use it performs better than our SSD’s. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it works well with a tricked out iMac.

Interesting thread. I think the MAS is potentially the best option for all things mac, plugins, etc. There’s nothing worse for me than having to hunt down plugin serials from 100 different sources after I wipe a system or install a new HD, etc. Finding updates is a full-on nightmare, IMHO. Having an option built in where all your stuff comes right along with your MAS account is such a relief.

If only it worked perfectly. Right now it doesn’t. X2Pro told me that it takes 3 weeks for updates to get processed. This needs to speed up, especially for Pro App third parties. Hopefully this will improve. I think that the world of ‘buy this and you can use it on 2 seats’ is out dated in the world of screen sharing, back to my mac, etc., and a big selling point for the MAS.

Let’s hope Apple starts fast laning pro app developers for the MAS.

Yeah man, that stuff is hard work. Here’s a little tip for you. When you record the video – if you use QT to do the screen recording on an iMac or at Cinema Display resolution, DON’T optimize the qt’s that Quicktime creates in FCPX. For whatever reason, optimizing the video to prores makes it 4fps instead of the high frame rate the H264 recordings make.

Just work with the native files. I beat my head on that for a day or two till I realized what was happening.

I should also say that this is if you use referenced media. You’d need to copy the proxies out of the main event into a shared location for all of it to work.

Sparse disk events only work with one user at a time, but, you could build a base Event (whether it’s a san location or a dmg or whatever) that contains all media. Then create your proxy media, which I think it’s just a checkbox in prefs. Once you have all your materials in the Event and all the proxies are created, duplicate the event for as many systems as you have running.

At this point everyone can work on their events individually. When done, one system mounts all three Events and copies all the compound clips (aka sequences) into a single Event. Uncheck the ‘use proxy media’ preference, and the high resolution footage should be relinked automatically.

I haven’t tested this, but this is where I’d look first. We don’t have a SAN or Red footage, so YMMV.

In regards to the working around, I think that the changes to Compounds in 10.0.6 were to create this kind of workflow. My guess is the direction of FCPX is away from projects altogether. It sure is easier that way (imho).

Thanks man. And I apologize if I offended you with the 20 paragraphs thing.

I should probably do a tutorial on the tutorial where I can show how much we used the magnetic to great effect on the tutorial itself. It does have its uses and in reality I don’t want to lose it, but my brain just likes to work outside of a magnetic timeline when I’m in the promo zone. Some people take great offense that I don’t stay in primary in our promo. It doesn’t seem to have an effect on the final product so in my mind it’s not a big deal.

One trick I didn’t touch on was splicing up the gap clip in primary to move things around, create spaces, etc. That can be pretty useful in and of itself. Considering the changes that came with 10.0.6 and how it completely revised how we work with compounds, I think what I’ve been pushing for in regards to minimizing primary in some fashion is within the realm of possibility for future versions of X. Pre 10.0.6 we had tons and tons of projects as versions and it started getting sloppy, even with folders. Now with new the CC format it’s neat and clean.

It’s not for everybody but I think it’s cool how the app is progressing. Tricks like using generators for custom client slates or building motion themes for rough cut graphics keep me up at night – in a good way.
