Keeping in mind it was 2006ish, Zax was the man back then. The first passes were very simple and then I dirtied it up with particular dots in the background just doing random things. Particular fireballs were attached to the electrons via nulls I think, and I believe I used some random camera movies to give it a wild vibe. The renders were painfully slow back then. The giveaway that it was Zax is the weirdo black white textured ball in the middle. Also the reflected environment is one of the primary reflections for Zax, at least in 2006.

It was a fun little project.

When FCPX exports a file to Keyflow, you choose the project you want the media to go to, then your workflow (which is already pre-assigned to the project in KFP) can follow some simple steps like tag the file xyz if the file contains that in it’s name, or copy a version to folder x somewhere on the finder, etc.

There are not an insane amount of options yet but they are getting better.

If you assign a workflow to a project, it will do things to the media that comes in. For example, if you have a file imported from a watch folder with the name ‘xyz’ in it, you can build a rule that tags any file that file something like ‘rough cuts’ or ‘client media’ or whatever.

We have completely overhauled our system to work with Keyflow and I’m a little late in getting that finished to show it off.

Affinity Photo is about $50 and is a standalone app in the mac app store. Extensions let it ‘hook’ into Photos for specific tasks.

That said I’m not trying to sell you on leaving Aperture. I tried Lightroom and the lack of certain basic things like a blur brush made it unwieldy for me (yes, I know, make a sharpness adjustment and set it to -4 or whatever). I think Photos Library Manager app now lets you work back and forth with Aperture.

Affinity is slowly taking over for me, at least until another app comes along that’s even better.

Charlie Austin turned me on to Affinity Photo on the app store. It has lots of el capitan photos extensions that fill in the gap. I did love my Aperture though. I still keep it for small non-personal projects and just create single libraries that I zip up when done. Photos does the rest. Affinities Skin Smoother is pretty great.
