July 12, 2013 at 7:59 pm in reply to: Oliver Peter’s Thoughts On The New Mac Pro

I’m really excited about it. It is, IMHO, a harbinger of things to come. A vastly improved FCPX, a 4k/Retina cinema display, and built in 4k HDMI monitoring all suggest what Oliver does – that Apple is building a true 4K editing machine. Couple this with some other developments like the upcoming 4K options to our Sony FS700, Resolve 10 awesomeness, and it’s no wonder I’m probably getting an ulcer from raw, unfettered impatience.

2 years ago started a painful transition period for all of us, not just with Apple but with all software in general. I’m really hoping that we’re about round the corner and enter a truly beautiful period of production. Software that is robust and does what we want with no workarounds, hardware that is so speedy 3D becomes less of a niche and more of a standard offering, and everything working together to give us more time to make with the pretty pictures.

We’re almost past that point we didn’t want to accept 2 years ago where the previous 32bit world was put to pasture. Everything is finally on the verge of dramatically getting better. The framework for an awesome generation of production is being set on all fronts. It’s an exciting, frustrating time!

I did! I should fire my copy editor. It’ll keep working, but it’s totally annoying.

Are you storing your bulky media in them? I always suggest keeping media in an outside, referenced location.

Right now I’m getting 140 MB/s write and 73.7 MB/s reads on a server mounted Sparse Bundle.

    LOL. (sluuuuurp) Ok, here’s more.

    13. AE imported into Motion
    14. Send to motion. Live updating in FCPX from motion.
    15. Send to Logic.
    16. Logic Pro X.
    17. VO tool auto defaults to whatever event the comp or project you’re recording audio is part of.
    18. Flash frame detection. Not just short clips, but an algorithm that scans for ultra-brief luma changes (when you’re working with pre-edited clips, like an EPK).
    19. A color bar of each clips thumbnail showing which section is actually being used in a comp or project.
    20. Dupe clip detection over timeline.
    21. Better and more simple project navigation.
    22. The ability to move more than one project into folders at a time.
    23. Stabilization ignoring erratic movement.
    24. Post to vine. Post to instagram.
    25. A preference allowing you to have default settings for every project, including commonly used smart folders, project/event setings, etc.
    26. Eye dropper for white balance.
    27. Fountain of youth.
    28. Fixed length duration projects/comps that DO NOT EVER CHANGE OR GO OVER/UNDER.
    29. Setting certain HD’s as unusable for FCPX. Macintosh HD, for example.
    30. Free mac pro with every purchase.

    How’s that?

    1. Magnetism off, or at least minimized and unselectable for some edits.
    2. Roles. Loadable, colorable, role sets. Attached to events.
    3. Keyword sets attached to each event vs being the same in each event.
    4. Kill the bugs!
    5. Fix the Quicktime -50 Error
    6. Sony RAW support for FS700 (coming very soon)
    7. Volume slider for media browser. Sometimes previewing a whoosh will knock me out of my chair.
    8. CALM act support.
    9. SliceX style animatting native to app.
    10. The ability to add stabilization to multicam clips after they are used.
    11. Vine, Instagram, alternative shaped video support.
    12. A Pro Apps division of the app store designed for plugins. Trusted plugins.
    13. The ability to group effects without tripping into motion. A ‘favorites’ right at the top.
    14. Watching folders and automatically importing anything put into them.
    15. An option to keep the playhead centered when playing video vs running off the screen. (cmd+spacebar for focused play)
    16. Multiple editors working off of the same event.

I bet a second cup of coffee would have me thinking of more.

  • Hah! That’s me happily holding an iPad mini the day it came out. I put a picture of myself looking back at me as if I were crazy on it.

It’s kind of a sarcastic circle of life. Or something. I dunno. I just made me laugh!

  • Oh and, once uploaded you’ll want to upgrade the video to 1080p. You do this in vimeo under ‘settings’ / ‘video file’ and then check the box for 1080p.

John Davidson | President / Creative Director | Magic Feather Inc.

  • Just use the default Vimeo upload destination in FCPX and in the popup dialogue set it to 1080p. Just did a 30 minute wedding and it rocked.
