I was a big advocate of 3rd party RAM. In this instance however I’m not very interested in pursing it because nobody has actually done a user replacement RAM on this particular computer. We don’t really know how easy or hard it is, how long it will take OWC to get the RAM to us, etc.

Just to put it out there, but the 64 gig RAM from OWC is $895. The 64 gig RAM upgrade from Apple is $1140 with small business discount. The Apple RAM is covered under Applecare and you don’t have to install anything. This is probably the closest to normal RAM prices I’ve ever seen from Apple, so I’m going with the preinstalled RAM.

The absolute most awesome thing in my opine about OS X Server is the software cache feature. That works flawlessly. Other things….not so much.

In my experience most new hardware releases come on or near point OSX releases. 10.9.1 beta has been in developers hands for about a week. The Mac Pro is requires drivers to work two GPUs, and they probably weren’t perfect when 10.9 went Golden Master back in September? October?

I mean that this is most likely a very large overhaul and not a little bug fix update. I think it could very well require a separate install vs replacing the App you have. I think FCPX and the Mac Pro will probably release simultaneously or very close together since Apple stated Aperture, Logic, and FCPX are being retooled to take advantage of all the Mac Pro can offer.

I guess we’re debating whether this will be a “Christmas” release where all gifts come at the same time vs a Chanukah release where all the things come staggered a few days apart.

I don’t think this update is going to be anything at all like those previous ones. I think it’s going to require OS X 10.9.1.

I mostly just want some new mac pros. Mostly.

We didn’t do any cleanup for the last years worth of sparse disks until yesterday. I generally feel like the machine of our business works better if one person masters a skill and then gets the others up to speed on how to do the same thing. So for now the main editor is cleaning stuff up, but eventually he’ll get the PA’s and everyone else involved. Just over the course of a few projects yesterday he cleaned up a TB of space on the server.

I think OS X 10.9.1 will likely release at the same time as, or very very near, to FCPX 10.1 (or 11) and the new Mac Pro release.
