Your terminology is off, but you got the gist of the workflow.
I don’t use Premiere, but you can dynamically link projects from pro into AE…that is you don’t have to export render out files to AE to color correct/timewarp or effect them.

Along with what Dave says about AE not being an editor, it’s can also be an extremely frustrating program. This program has a real steep learning curve, especially if you are coming at it from scratch. I’ve been editing since the late 90’s and started using AE back in ’00 and I find myself learning new stuff with it everyday.
Todd Kopriva of Adobe put together a great list of resources to help out new people with AE. Getting started with After Effects (CS4, CS5, & CS5.5)

Color/Size can be done with the character/paragraph window-just highlight a letter and change the font size and color. If that was it, you are done. If you wanted them to continue to change over time, that would require text animators and a lot of them, you would have to select your start and end for each letter and apply the correct animator (though there are some presets that will randomonly do this).
Rotation would require animators regardless as the character/paragraph window won’t let you rotate text.
Finally there is another option you might want to check out – the Decompose Text Script at AEScripts. You select your text and run this script and it will break out each letter and put it on a seperate layer. Depending on what you want to do, it could be pretty helpful.

What do you mean “edit each individual letter”? Do you want each letter to have a different size, rotation, scale, color? You could do all of that if you were so inclined by using the a lot of text animators.

Under the Particle Pull-down the default “Particle Type” is Sphere, the bottom 3 particles are all different custom particles – Custom, Custom Colorize, Custom Fill. You should choose the one works for this project then the Custom properties will be active and you choose your pre-comped alphabet layer.

After you have made all your layers 1 or 2 frames long, you want them to play, one after another. So you select all the layers and use the keyframe assistant to sequence them 1 after another. You can do this step manually if you want, just dragging the layers individually and moving them along the timeline, using the keyframe asst. is just quicker.
If you are having problem with the keyframe asst, just do it manually.

Kevin – that’s trapcode form.
Just adding to what Kevin said, after you create your custom particle layer, you will probably have to play with the size of the particles quite a bit for them to overlap and fill in the logo. Just a guess but I think the particles are going to need to be 2 to 3 times the size of the spheres you are using now.
You may even need to create another map in form so that when gradient that shatters the layer moves into place, it makes the particles get smaller, so it looks like more of them.

If you stop at different times, you will see that those are actually shots of different images. Someone painted that title multipe times with different color paint. Also note that the titles were painted on grey paper, which under certain tranfer modes in AE will completely disappear.
This isn’t exactly how I would do this, but if you are just learning AE this will probably be the easiest method. Create a title in AE and duplicate 15 times. Turn off all the layers except one. Position, scale and rotate the layer(perhaps change the color). Now do this for all the other layers(slight changes in size, position rotation). When you are finished move 1 or 2 frames forward – and trim all layer out point “alt + ]”.
Finally, under animation tab select -> Keyframe Assistant -> Sequence Layers without an any overlap. A couple of times you may want to drag the in or out point to overlap the other layers so the title is on screen multiple times.
One last thing, you may want to play with transfer modes of the different text on the layers when you overlap the time, it will give you some nice blends when you have different colors and the text overlaps.
