For 2 days, I couldn’t get the file to open without resorting to work-arounds, today I can’t get it to fail.
Not a problem with finishing the project or getting it to eventually open, I really more concerned with avoiding this in the future, but with the randomness of the issue, it’s extremely hard to diagnose.

When you say the text looks blocky are you talking about a rendered file or are you still in the composition window?

Create your new composition with the proper settings(save for how it counts frames) and click “OK”. Now in your timeline in the upper left corner you will see the current frame, “Cntl” + click it and it will change to display timecode.
Now when you create a new comp it will default to displaying timecode rather than frame counter.

Those are the formats I would want(I use Avid), but the best bet is to just talk to the editor and confirm what will work best for him.

One way to create the “fire” in the first video would be to use a particle generator – like trapcode particular to create fire, track the hand motion and use that to control the position of the emitter.

Download the Avid QT codecs, install and render to the MPEG 50 MXF codec.

Or you could just render to an QT-Animation(lossless) and let the avid guy do the transcode upon import. Gives the added benefit that if they change things in the future they have a completely uncompressed animation. Though in Avid it really shouldn’t matter as it handles mixed footage/resolution pretty well.

Would a sped up shot(400%) going down the stairs be too out of place? That’s how I would handle it and if need be, I’d ramp a few other shots, just so it’s not the only one.

I don’t think so, maybe someone else might have a trick.
What you can do though, is manually change the camera zoom so it has your layer in perfect focus. If you view from the top mode as you change the zoom of the camera you will see a line showing you exactly where the camera is focusing.
