  • >I’d try FW 800 or SATA raid- much faster transfer than USB-2 despite what the claimed USB-2 numbers might be.

    Hi Noah

How much faster with FW800 and SATA raid? Want to guide me to a drive you like?

    >Maybe you need to go to a Firestore, (if they record HD yet) or maybe a THIRD p2 card? It seems to me that two cards just aren’t enough for continous recording in 1080 HD. Is that right from what you have seen so far? You can’t get teh media off the P2 card fast enough to rotate them?

    Hi David

Yes I have two 8gb cards. Im not so much having problems as just trying to understand how this will work in the field. Between my own professional use of the camera and the renting of it through my rental company, I need to have an accurate troublefree workflow to recommend. Faster downloads would be better for certain. But having a bullet proof download workflow is critical. Only then will I know how to advise my clients and steer them clear of trouble.

Buying more 8gb cards is not an option right now. From what I hear I am lucky to have a camera at all and even luckier to get two 8gb cards. Im keeping my mind open about the Firestore. From experience Im hesitant about piggybacking a third party mission critical/software enabled/cable connected/battery powered device onto any camera. Who knows it may work very well. However I think the P2 cards work wonderfully ( so far ) and would like to continue recording that way.

    Hi Jan

Which part of Panasonic deals with service on this camera? Im assuming its not the same as with the Varicam. Have any contact info?

My point exactly. I need the support of the bigger LA dealers. The fact that I appear to have to pay a purchase premium to do this is bothersome. Its just not worth buying a professional camera without professional backup and support.

A local company who bought from our local dealer had the exact same problem as I did with a piece of equipment. My LA dealer communicated the problem to the service department at Panasonic and my problem was taken care of under warranty. The local company, who bought local, were not successful at getting their problem covered under warranty and it cost them thousands.

I make my Sony purchases in LA as well. I just dont get told its more expensive because Im not using my regional ‘authorised reseller’.

It was vague because Im trying not to upset any particular companies. Here goes again:

I have been told by two LA ‘ Panasonic authorised reseller’ companies for them to sell equipment to me outside their ‘area’, they are not able to give me the same discount they could if I lived in LA. Essential they have to charge me more than someonewho lives in LA. My understanding is that different product lines ( ie SDX or Varicam ) have different rules.

Hopefully that explains it a bit clearer.

While we are on the subject of pricing fairness. I have to say that I find Panasonics policy of assisting local ‘authorized resellers’ by allowing them to get better unit pricing than out of area ‘authorized resellers’ really misguided. I regularly have to pay more for my Panasonic equipment than I would locally, so I can get better support and advice for my business.
I understand the philosophy, but in practice the policy is really flawed. If all the authorised dealers provided the same level of service and support then the policy might be valid. But they dont.

December 1, 2005 at 2:13 am in reply to: Anyone using HDlink with a 23″ cinema display?

I just hooked a CineAlta up to the BT-LH1700W. I could definitely see the limitations of displaying a 1920 x 1080 image on a 1280x 720 resolution LCD. I dont like the way larger LCD’s look when they display less than 1:1 resolution.

However what the BT-LH1700W monitor does for the money is amazing.

Chris – I agree with you on the BT-LH900. Fantastic little monitor. Couldnt live without it, especially on a travel job.

I have used a HDLink and a 23″ Cinema Display for a couple of years now with the Varicam. Other than the initial question as to why the picture doesnt fit the whole screen, most are thrilled with the picture. Engineers are nervous about using for QC, but clients and directors love it.

July 24, 2005 at 7:13 pm in reply to: Defending uncompressed DVCPRO 100 v HDCAM

I am going through a similar issue right now where some long term clients of mine have been convinced that HDCam 1080 at origination level is superior to the Varicam for a 1080i delivery. Ironically inhouse they plan to digitise from HDCam via HDSDI to the DVCPro codec. Nothing I seem to say or show them will convince them to keep using my Varicam because it is 720P. The discussion seems to be above and beyond ‘ actual’ image quality, because everyone is thrilled with the current pictures.

One of my many arguments was that the 1200a DVCProHD deck was highly flexible and extremely reliable in their post enviroment. However that died a death last week when the heads on my deck just died right before a shoot ( cracked, I am being told ). Panasonic are telling me that I have a $6000 bill for a drum replacement on a deck that is 13 months old with minimal usage. Hard to find the enthusiasm for Panasonic to keep fighting for them right now.

Do I have to get the camera to you before the warranty expires or can I just schedule it before that date? My warranty is up in a week or so time?
