  • How do I check my installer? All I see are uninstallers?

  • It’s installed. My question is why I didn’t get FX 6. I need 6 but my software says it’s version 5.8. I thought the versions were in sync with each other.

I’m using AVID 6 on a new iMac and am having issues with spanned clips for interviews I’m shooting. I’ve not heard of clipwrap. How much is it and will it make files that AVID can read. Thanks!

  • I have found that the camera settings didn’t matter. The video continued to drop out in the same places. So I changed the video files a little by color-correcting the shots that were causing the trouble. This has fixed everything. I re-transcoded the transport stream and it played to the camera flawlessly. I’m convinced that a camera setting I’m unfamiliar with is still the cause of my problems but I can’t figure out what it is at this time. The m2t files always import back into AVID flawlessly and play fine. Crazy.

    Later cows!!

  • Through my own tinkering I believe the solution to my problem lies with the camera I’m using. I’m currently testing a theory on setting the Sony HVR-V1U’s VCR settings to “HDV” instead of “Auto”. The owner’s manual is cryptic at best. I encountered huge stumbling blocks last year digitizing video into the AVID from this camera by not turning off the “i.link conv” function.

So far switching the VCR section strictly to “HDV” has eliminated several key problems. I’ve also had some good luck switching firewire cables, running the camera on just battery power, as well as importing my transport stream (m2t) and re-transcoding it as a second transport stream to “cleanse” it from corruption. Switching cameras didn’t seem to make a difference whatsoever,

But I’m convinced that the camera is my stumbling block because the file plays fine when importing the m2t back into AVID. Adding a simple color correction to the scenes that are dropping out (just to make the transport stream different than before) seems to help, too. I can’t find any troubleshooting info online about this camera–a great camera with a great lens–so I’m letting others out there who may be using this camera with an AVID know what I’m going through.

Operator error?–sure, why not–but Sony’s manual doesn’t make my life any easier. This camera does more than I can possibly appreciate.

It was my HDV camera. It was set to “i.link conv”. Oh well that’s 4 weeks without a camera and $150.00 in shipping for nothing. Just the flip of an internal menu switch. No big deal. I just love technology where the instruction manual doesn’t say shit about hooking a firewire based camera up to a computer. Hunt and peck. Hunt and peck. Thanks to those who never spoke up to offer any advice about this. I really appreciate the community support. You can go back to your AVID vs FCP discussions now.

January 30, 2008 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Advanced Keyframing in the way using BCC 5.0 !

    Mark,

I got this info from Boris tech support:

“The Advanced Keyframing is actually the way that the AVX_2 plugs are set up; apply an AVX_2 plug, you automatically get all the enhancements, including Advanced Keyframing, associated with it. The installer for BCC AVX 5.0 contains an install option, three below the top install option for “BCC 5 AVX 2 MC 2.5, XPressPro 5.5 or later” (the bottom of three subsets). The option you’d want is “BCC AVX 1.5 MC 2.5, XPressPro 5.5 or later” – this will install plugs that will work faster (as they’re much simpler) and will not use Advanced Keyframing. Note that if you already have AVX_2 effects in your timeline, the corresponding AVX_1.5 effect won’t work; you’d have to re-apply it, or keep the AVX_2 plugs installed.”

I re-installed BCC 5 and had to drag the filter sets out of the second AVX Plug ins folder and put them into the first AVX Plug ins folder (the installer put a folder of Boris AVX plug ins into the AVID AVX plug ins and I just moved them) I relaunched AVID Xpress Pro and when I applied a filter to the timeline it worked–no advanced keyframing!! This whole thing happens because we (you and I) probably just installed whatever the installer listed as the most up to date set and didn’t know any better. Some of my AVX 2 filters don’t work now and I have to re-apply them but no big deal for me at this time.

    Hope this helps!

January 16, 2008 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Suddenly cannot capture HDV audio or video…!

    David,

I’m sorry but I don’t know what to tell you. I went through AVID tech support for 2 straight weeks trying to figure out my problem and they never resolved it. No one on the Cow or AVID forums even bothered to write or suggest anything. I tried my V1U on a friend’s Final Cut Pro system and it did the same thing–no digitizing video or audio through firewire, even though it shot the video just fine.

I assumed it was a camera issue and immediately sent it in for warranty repair. After 4 weeks I got the camera back and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing. I was flabbergasted. I asked them for detailed info and all they said was that they cleaned the tape path/heads and all systems checked out. When I got it back I hooked it back up to my Xpress Pro system (Intel iMac, 3 GB RAM, etc. etc.) and it worked perfectly. It still does.

My only conclusion was that shipping it to the warranty facility jiggled it around in the back of the UPS truck and that’s what fixed it. I’m at a loss as to what really happened. Wish I could be more help to you because NO ONE friggin’ helped me in any way! I felt like I was the only person in the world this was happening to.

    Best of luck to you!
