  • Suddenly cannot capture HDV audio or video…!

I’m running AVID Xpress Pro 5.7.2 on a new 24″ Intel iMac (2.3 GHZ, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB internal HD, Mac OS 10.4.9, Quicktime Pro 7.1.6–no Mojo!) and I normally capture HDV video and audio from my Sony HVR-V1U. It normally works fine. 2 days ago everything stopped working correctly. I cannot capture into my Mac. Right now I capture only to an internal 500 GB hard drive and there has been no problems (400 or so GB free space remains). I can control the camera tape shuttle functions with the AVID software but it won’t capture the audio or video–it says “suddenly does not receive audio or video stream from the deck”.

This was working just fine 3 days ago and I’ve done nothing different. So since this started I’ve tried switching firewire cables, I’ve tested the camera on another computer where it seems to work fine–it outputs video and audio from firewire to other things like televisions, other cameras, and DVD recorders. I’ve not messed with the camera while it’s hooked up because the camera manual says disconnect firewire cable before changing settings. Something seems to be fried somewhere. Could it be the video card inside the Mac? I bought this thing in April. How do I diagnose this?

This camera (V1U) is the only HDV device I own. Anyone have any ideas?

John, I now have a similar problem to what you posted here last August — same camera — but the Avid MC sees a Panasonic handycam. Amazing that it won’t see the Sony HVR-V1U. It used to. Any solutions on your end?

    David,

I’m sorry but I don’t know what to tell you. I went through AVID tech support for 2 straight weeks trying to figure out my problem and they never resolved it. No one on the Cow or AVID forums even bothered to write or suggest anything. I tried my V1U on a friend’s Final Cut Pro system and it did the same thing–no digitizing video or audio through firewire, even though it shot the video just fine.

I assumed it was a camera issue and immediately sent it in for warranty repair. After 4 weeks I got the camera back and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing. I was flabbergasted. I asked them for detailed info and all they said was that they cleaned the tape path/heads and all systems checked out. When I got it back I hooked it back up to my Xpress Pro system (Intel iMac, 3 GB RAM, etc. etc.) and it worked perfectly. It still does.

My only conclusion was that shipping it to the warranty facility jiggled it around in the back of the UPS truck and that’s what fixed it. I’m at a loss as to what really happened. Wish I could be more help to you because NO ONE friggin’ helped me in any way! I felt like I was the only person in the world this was happening to.

    Best of luck to you!

It was my HDV camera. It was set to “i.link conv”. Oh well that’s 4 weeks without a camera and $150.00 in shipping for nothing. Just the flip of an internal menu switch. No big deal. I just love technology where the instruction manual doesn’t say shit about hooking a firewire based camera up to a computer. Hunt and peck. Hunt and peck. Thanks to those who never spoke up to offer any advice about this. I really appreciate the community support. You can go back to your AVID vs FCP discussions now.
