We used the pre set (DVC PRO HD 59.94) For some reason it didn’t work. MJPG pre set works fine. Uncompressed pre set works fine as well.

If you want it to look like stop-motion (like in the clip you refer to) you should shoot it as stop motion. That’s the whole point. Of course you could time remap and wiggle your footage in an endless amount of ways but it’s never going to look arty and cool like real stop-motion.

If you want to be totally compatible so that all PC dorks on the corporate end can view your stuff you need to use MPG1. It looks horrible.

  • You don’t get tape drop outs when you capture directly. For keying, anything gone through DV compression pretty much sucks.

You need to convert the MPG2 to something that can be read by something like FCP or AfterEffects. The lower the compression the better. Both FCP and AfterEffects do pretty good job on NTSC to PAL conversion or vice versa.

There’s no way to do the conversion without loss since it involves both re-timing and scaling. Starting off with MPG2 is pretty bad but it’s not hopeless.
