Are you using GPU acceleration? What are the specs on your GPU?
What codec are you exporting from? To what? What is your target bit rate?
Are you exporting straight from Premiere, or are you using Adobe Media Encoder?
All of these things can impact the length of time it takes to export a file. The file size is generally determined by the bit rate and codec to which you are exporting.

When you edit your commercials, do you do a lot of effects and graphics within Premiere, or do you use After Effects more? I only ask this because if you do switch to Avid you’ll pretty much have to outsource your graphics to another program (such as After Effects) if you want them to look even decent. I had to make the same change about eight years ago and had a really difficult go of it initially.
That said, things may have changed with Avid since I got away from it about four years ago though, so obviously don’t take my word as gospel.

If I’m understanding your question, all you need to do to go back to your timeline without the playhead jumping from where it’s parked is to click anywhere but the area that isn’t inside the red rectangle here:
