Actually a better source for the type of map you need is here:

    https://planetpixelemporium.com/earth.html

And here’s one on google images:

Oh yea, you can keyframe its rotation in the rotation parameters, which is fun.

You can download the manual here:

Basically you need a spherical map like the ones you can get here:

    https://www.unearthedoutdoors.net/global_data/true_marble/download

Then you just apply the effect and adjust the radius for size and lighting and shading parameters to taste. It’s pretty simple really.

Pretty sure linked layers don’t translate to AE. You just have to relink them with parenting.

Don’t know if it’s still Dave LaRonde’s stock answer, but from everything I’ve heard, OpenGL doesn’t work in AE, regardless of your card.

You’re right that masks don’t have any such functionality built-in.
You might be able to accomplish something like this with expressions.
And I have a feeling that if this is possible, it might involve the Reshape effect, which is a warping tool that utilizes masks. You might be able, via expressions, to link a mask in one comp to the mask used in the reshape effect in another comp.
You might want to pose this question in the Expressions forum.

See if your folks will let you get a subscription to Lynda.com. They have step by step video tutorials covering everything you need to know to get up and running. And don’t be afraid to read the manual. It’s very well written, and not too hard to follow.

    Good Luck!

January 21, 2010 at 8:48 pm in reply to: Rendering/Compression Question. Please, help!

How about standard mpeg2 compression for DVD. It’s pretty much the standard. Don’t do it from AE, though. Take your uncompressed render from AE into a dedicated compressor such as Adobe Media Encoder or Apple Compressor. There are presets in those for controlling the amount of compression based on the duration of your file.
