we have a huge project right now…the 2nd one of it’s kind, last year we did it on quad 3s, this year 8 cores…the client is EXTREMELY amazed at how much faster they new intels are over the quads, so yes, an intel 8 core is indeed the future! for now…dual quads will be soon, and so on…
less time spent rendering, since you have to render everything in FCP, is an advantage you can’t dismiss!

July 27, 2007 at 8:25 pm in reply to: Is it Better to Downconvert HDV Footage or just capture rawi hate to say it, but if you are going to do any HDV work, and output HDV, then a new 8 core Intel is in your future…
if you are doing SD stuff, then downconvert out of the deck into the FCP, and edit everything in SD, but if you ever need to go back to HD, you have to recapture.
one problem with going SD with HDV footage is the aspect ratio…if you go letterboxed out of the deck, and keep everything letterboxed, you’re okay with going SD…if you go center crop…and your camera guys didn’t shoot 4×3 safety…then you are screwed too….unfortunately, you have to rely on a bunch of things to get your project right…
i guess first question should always be…what are you delivering?

lacie drives are horrible IMHO….the ones that use WD drives….
check your settings to make sure your render files are going to the right place…and you’re reading off that folder as well…
Macs don’t get viruses, so that can’t be the problem…maybe a reload of FCP is in order…but i’m just getting my feet wet myself..i’m sure someone else can chime in with other ideas!

did you happen to mute a video track? this loses all reference to rendered files on that track….

May 4, 2007 at 2:41 pm in reply to: Avid Mojo as A/D converter for analog (VHS) capture???i’m thinkin of installing Xpress on the Mac, and capturing VHS through the Mojo in Xpress, then exporting a QT and bring that into FCP. can FCP read QT refs from Avid?

May 2, 2007 at 7:32 pm in reply to: one last question for now….firewire capture with firewire drive?thanks…that’s good to know, so now i just have to figure out how to get control via firewire off the Sony DVCam 1500…i have control via 422, and have changed the control in the menu on the deck…still nothing…but i didn’t come out of FCP to see if it will now recognize the firewire drive.
i am just setting this system up, and getting to learn the ins and outs…we are adding a couple FCP suites, with FCP Studio 2 when it comes out, and need to know how to do everything on them before we get the new systems….we currently own 6 or so FCPs, but they are used in our graphics and encoding departments as input and output for AE and other apps, our edit department is getting a couple to ease our need for converting things etc into our AVIDs.
thanks again for all your help…everyone that has answered my novice questions so quickly. I have been on AVIDs since 96, and most recently DS Nitris…I like the interface on FCP…very DS like…but there are definately differences….stremgths and weaknesses of both Apple and AVID…I hope we can mesh them together to get the best out of both worlds!
