I reviewed that tutorial… but, this tutorial uses a circular mask (which I could replace with a rectangle) that will not work because the mask blocks out the words outside of the the text line.

Basically, this works in that the bulged becomes rectangular/square to match the text being bulged but it also eliminates the texts outside the mask area. I need the text to bulge (in a rectangular format) but not eliminate or effect the other words in the line of text.

You would think something as simple as this could be done easily. If the bulge filter had a option to use a square/rectangle instead of circle, this would be simple solution.

Thanks…. but, the Bulge only seems to use radius as a criteria.

What I would prefer is a block or more precisely a rectangle bulging shape (in order to match the letter shapes).

I probably should have been more clear with my original post.

While a bit off topic… I might note that when editing I prefer to use Avid Liquid (formerly Pinnacle Liquid) for one very big reason… you will virtually NEVER lose your work. It’s the only editing software that has an auto-save that occurs something like 30 times per second (or some unbelievably short period of time simular to 30 times per second). And… even with this extremely current auto-save capability, you will see no drag or slowing of your system. I really wish AE had this capability (…or, I wish Avid Liquid could do what AE can do)…. but, so far this seems to be an exclusive to Avid Liquid auto save capability.

Unfortunately, I believe Furnace is not available as a plug-in for AE… but, is a plug-in for Shake,Avid DS Nitris, OFS and Discreet. If you have any of these editing soltware, you can use Furnace as a plug-in. That being said, according to AE… Furnace is available as a plug-in… but, the foundry sites doesn’t seem to indicate this as an acceptable plug-in. You probably need to contact The Foundary to be certain.

Also, I believe SteadyMove Pro is an AE plug-in.

I do get annoyed at the people who say that AE can do anything. This leads to a desire to create complex 3D scenes and VFX by the poor young folks who put all their eggs in the AE basket with high expectations.

While I don’t get annoyed, I do find it amazing how many posts have questions about using AE as if it was a typical NLE. Many of the problems in this area I have read are waaaay over thought in “animated terms”. …When, a simple old school approach of filming and editing with AE providing the special effects would make the whole project easier and simplier.

Without any experience or basic knowledge of how to use AE will make what you want to do very difficult… that being said, the tutorials metioned in the other posts will be your best bet at your attempt.

However, I think Richard’s suggestion to use a video editing software and transitions (such as Hollywood FX) will definately be the simplist but may not have the cool factor of animation like effects that can be accomplished with AE. But… if you have to learn AE as well as complete a project… well, you may hit the wall on so many issues that the only way to complete your project within a reasonable length of time would be to use a standard pro-level video editings software.

    Why not work backwards then…

Film the shot the way you want it to look… then convert the video to a cartoon/animated look.

This way, it is easier to create the subject/movement… and, the process of converting to animation becomes the work.

  • “… and find a way to seemlessly composite the rope/thread to the coil/spool as they both animate…”

hmmm….those few words make it sound so easy… 🙂

I tried some time ago to try and create this effect without 3D animation and basically gave up and simply video recorded an actual spool unwinding and rewinding… then use a typical high end NLE to convert the action into what looked as if it was animated. Waaaay easier and faster.

I am betting that it was done with camera work as you described… then in post editing theys simply blurred, blended track layers, changed colors, etc. using a basic editing software.

How much is your time worth?

You can achieve the film look in many number of ways… AE is just one way… Magic Bullet is another.

The difference is the time and consitency of the effect. Movie Magic shortens the film look creation time and can produce consitant film look.

The single biggest downside to Magic Bullet is that it you need a very good video card… this software is very Video CPU dependent. As a result, it is VERY slow to render. The newer version is suppose to be significantly faster… but, that would mean instead of being glacial as the older version (which I have used occasionally)… it is only semi-glacial.
