Thanks Bruce, this is the type of response I was looking for and addresses many of the concerns I have. Yes, the H5 has -20db pad when using line in ☹. This is why I was asking about some of the lower end Tascam units as I’ve heard some of them may actually bypass the preamps completely when fed line level inputs, so I am in the process of researching that before selling my 302/H5 and pulling the plug on a MixPre or F4/F8. The Zoom F series looks great for the cost too.

Hey Robert,
From my understanding (or lack thereof), the 302 has quality components and preamps, but this is offset by sending it into a low budget digital recorder like the H5. If say I use an MKH 416 mic, into the 302, then send that signal into a cheap recorder, im wondering if that somewhat defeats the purpose of having such a good mic and mixer? The signal now has to pass through the lower quality preamps with a low quality analog to digital conversion at the end of the chain. I know I could always rent a sound devices 702 for pro level jobs, so that is an option I suppose.

Thanks Ty, im getting great input here. I will need to mix at times, yes indeed. I have been fine with 3 channels so far but as I already stated, 4 or more channels would just be a safe bonus I think. Also, thanks again to Rob.

Thanks for the in depth reply. I probably won’t need more than 4 channels but I suppose too many is better than not enough lol. Yes the Zoom F4/F8 are both on my radar as a combo mixer/recorder for sure, and yes I will be using it primarily for film. I know the issue with some of the low budget recorders is in their preamps. From my “understanding” the mixpre-6 has the better preamps as well as better limiters so that is definitely an option if it can get me closer to pro level sound. I feel as if I am defeating the purpose of owning/using my 302 which is such a great little mixer and sending it into an h5 :/ as many on the web have already pointed out. I was looking at some of the Tascam low budget recorders too as I heard they work better than the Zoom H series for line level signals fed from the 302?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I haven’t looked into much audio stuff in a while so im a bit out of date. The F8 and F4 really look like great options. Im just a little hesitant to sell my Sound Devices 302. If I sell the 302 I would definitely like an all in one mixer/recorder.

Does anyone know if the bi-color versions work at full output?

He is one of the best ever. His website is a great place for information too. He’s even answered one or two of my questions on his forums :). Probably not a film most people think of when they think of great cinematography, but I thought his work on the Hudsucker Proxy was amazing with the visuals. Not to mention everything else he has done!

Yeah the aputure does indeed have a fresnel add-on accessory that works great from my understanding. Its only about $70. Still, the Came-TV lights can be used as open face as well if need be which is nice.

Thanks I really appreciate the input. Glad to hear the fan isn’t an issue. I heard mixed opinions on that. Yes indeed I am thinking about getting a pair of 55w versions, but im also looking at the 100w and 150w versions as well. Im just not not sure if I should maybe shell out the extra cash and go with some Aputure 120D ii’s instead. People seem to swear by their reliability and not so much for the Came-TV stuff. Hence the thread. I know the Came-TV lights have some excellent CRI/TCRI ratings as well as good output per watt.

Thanks Francoise!
I saw your reply over on FCP as well, thanks for the response. It seems my options are limited and I misunderstood the equipment necessary for a good grade. Steve Shaw (creator of lightspace) over at light illusion said my setup was viable and plenty of people grade that way. However I’m beginning to think I should either purchase a monitor with internal LUT capability or purchase a decklink along with a 4K LUT box?
