Alex, thanks for your help. I didn’t do any formatting of the external hard drive. Too skeerd. Instead, I put it all on the computer as the project won’t get any larger. I relinked all the media (Pays to be organized, I wasn’t). Now I can dynamic link to After Effects.

With that said I have a totally different question. Could you watch this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsR7nB14kH8 From 1:17-2:00 Kevin talks about making a Z map. He says it’s very simple to create in After Effects. I think I understand what it’s doing, but never done it and can’t figure how.

I have to do exactly like he’s doing in his tutorial. I also want to help a poorly focused video and make the background even more out of focus.

    So much learning.

I’m going backup my stuff and format the drive. I’ll start again from scratch. I’ll give iomega a call too. I’ll let you know what happened.
    Thanks

It’s connected with firewire 800 and it was formatted with disk utility. The drive has 2 plugins for the firewire and I tried both.

With this in mind I just now put some assets and started a Premiere Pro project on a little iomega USB powered drive, again formatted with disk utility. Guess what? It works. I can “replace with after effects composition”, and the clips appear.

So then…the problem with my main storage and back up?

    Thanks
    Joel

I too find it better to work off the internal drive, but it’s to full of everything. I just think it should work though?
    Thanks

I can import assets manually. FYI if it matters, the external is an iomega 4 TB raid 1.

Thanks for the response Alex. I have nothing but Mac. I guess that’s HFS file system. No windows in the mix.

    So much learning.
