This looks exactly like a tutorial I’ve seen online somewhere (couldn’t tell you where, though). They probably followed that tutorial or something like it for the “draw on” effect and then precomped that, adding 3D motion to them afterwords.

Basically, you take your pre-drawn shape and break it up into smaller, individual “strokes” in Photoshop. You’ll notice that some of the thicker chunks don’t “draw” in, they just kind of pop out. The lines are easier to do. Animated mask reveals if I had to guess.

Now after that’s been done and animated, you can drop your composition into another composition, making it a 3D layer, and animate it around as you like.

  • As far as I know, there isn’t a way to get a “cost” read-out for any given layer. Deselect all your layers, and hit ‘e’ to reveal all your effects on all layers. The layers that have a lot of effects working is probably your culprit, but you’ll have to look at it.

Motion blur (RSMB, in particular), lens blur and match grain always make my comps run slow, so I usually have them off when I’m working and then switch them all back on for the final render.

Thanks for the advice, but what ended up working was moving those keyframes over one frame. The keyframes changed to 3 on that frame, and then were constant the rest of the sequence, so moving the keyframe to the frame before and rendering just the problem frame worked. When I have some time, I might look at the things you mentioned and see if any of it was the problem. Thanks

Possibly motion controlled cameras, but I’d guess they were locked off and camera movement was done in post. He’s also on a green screen for a lot of it, so they probably had extras walking back and forth across a green screen, shot in time lapse, and were added as another layer when they were in front of him. The taxi was probably just a split screen.

    Definitely lots of planning.
