  • Thanks Tom for the info
In FCE 2.0 I always had the option to “export using compressor”
and it worked very well with DVDSP 3.0 ( I think that is where the program came from. ) But FCE 4.0 only allows me to export using Quicktime Conversion.

    Which leads to another question
IF I export as a QT movie and then compress to mpeg2….Would that not compress the DV file TWICE ? lowering the quality

IF I export using the QT conversion is that converting directly from the DV video file…and is the quality similiar to what I was getting from Compressor ?

    One more question….
What is the best mpeg2 converter that I can add to FCE 4.0 as an export option ?

    Thanks again everybody

The problem was Quicktime version 7.0.4

I just down loaded QT 7.1 and all seem to be working fine again

So the conflict is a bug in version 7.0.4
which will not allow FCP or Final cut express to recognize any DV device and the program
    just quits.

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem

    thanks for your response

I am trying to track down the conflict
from looking at different forums there are many people with the exact same problem and symtoms

it seem that Final cut express will NOW not recognize any DV device
and even more people are having the same problem withthe new HD version

I’m still using the regular final cut express ver 2.0.3

It may be related to my latest upgrade of Quicktime 7.0.4

I found an article by apple warning of DV device problems related to Quicktime 7
it recommended to trash the QT receipt package and re-install the lates version of QT which would be 7.1

That will be my next attempt at this problem
I have already re-installed the old original version of FCX ver 2.0 and still can not get any results with mt DV deck or camera …. It’s like my computer just quits the program any time I try and connect via firewire to and DV device

Maybe it’s APPLE’s way of making us to upgrade ?????

If I found out what is causing the problem I let everyone know
OR If you know of anybody which is suffering the same symptoms maybe we can work together to find a cure,

    thanks

May 24, 2006 at 4:51 pm in reply to: FCE Quits when trying to Capture

I just learned that FCE also quits when trying to print video to a recorder
and will not even let me export to a quick time movie.

every time the program just quits

The project I’m working on is a group of about 180 photos that were scanned and imported into FCE
I learned of these problem when I tried to capture some video to add to the project.

that when the program would just Quit….Now I’m trying to transfer my work to tape or even a QT movie so
I can use my other editor …..I should have just used my reliable Media 100 from the start……..

I have had FCE for two years with NO PROBLEMS now it just quits all the time

What was in that UPDATE 2.0.3 I never had this happen before ????

    Any Advice would help
    thanks

March 30, 2006 at 6:35 am in reply to: Board fails acceptence test

I remember a few years ago there was a little known problem with the Acceptence test
which I found out the hard way

When I upgraded to ver. 8 or maybe it was 8.1 my P6000 board with DV option failed the acceptance test
I had the board for a few years and I knew it was in perfect shape and had no reason to fail.

The Problem I found out was that if you had more than 1 gb or ram memory the board would never pass the Acceptance test.

To fix the problem I removed one ram chip ran the test and it passed with high marks…. Replaced the ram chip so I had my 1 gb of memory back and the board has been great ever since…. I’m still running with no problems.

I discovered the fix by reading the white papers that m100 had on the web and the was one small statement that talked about ram memory and possible failure of the acceptance test.

Try TESTING your board with less than 1 gb of ram memory …IT may actually PASS

    Good luck

March 30, 2006 at 6:11 am in reply to: DVD-R recorder to buy?

    These units are stand alone
just like an old VHS recorder execpt it records in DVD

You can even record your favorite TV shows
They are great for a quick and easy DVD of your video projects

March 22, 2006 at 5:45 pm in reply to: DVD-R recorder to buy?

I found that most of the Philips line of DVD recorders have Component inputs and out puts
    Model DVDR 615

Except… All the Philips models are DVD+R

    No Problem
    I make my DVD on a DVD+RW
( Rewritable are great if you mess up the first recording just erase it and start over )

Then take the VIDEO TS folder from the DVD+R and use Roxio Titanium Toast to burn a DVD-R

Simple -Quick and very High Quality

And the unit sells for about $170.00 at most department stores
compared to over a $1000 for a prosumer DVD-R machines with component Inputs

    good luck

February 13, 2006 at 6:45 pm in reply to: Media 100 SW …Support???

    Hi Andy & Floh
I purchased M100sw back in december but now in feb. I have completed my second samll project.
the first project I went straight to DVD Exported by reference into compressor every thing seemed to work fine.

Now I working on a project and realized I can’t even see my video on a real TV monitor to check Color and can not send the final edit to a tape deck.

I have the SW progarm on a G4 laptop which also has Final Cut express and DVDSP-3 loaded on the same harddrive.

I have M100 XS on another computer which I have been using for years.

Since your post a few weeks ago have you found an easy way to export / send your final edit to a tape machine or even view on a TV monitor.

    any info would help
    Thanks

December 8, 2005 at 1:26 am in reply to: Homemade DVD Copy Protection….simple but it works

Both you and Jim have good points.
But in the real world….nobody wants to pay the full price. I get 1 or 2 cold calls each month from people wanting me to video tape parties and special events. ( I don’t even advertise and have been working full time as a shooter / Editor for 10 years ) The call often starts ” I need….how much do you charge ?…..” I start by giving them my half day rate. Often there is an awkward silents as they realize ( or I hope they realize ) that I do professional work.

That is why I prefer to do corporate work. I charge a day rate plus any extra equipment used and editing time. The more the company wants the more they pay….simple and direct.

But when a parent or the director of a play calls They only want to pay $25 or $28 per tape . I would love to say Sure I will video the Play please have a check for $1800.00 and I will give you one edited copy….

Quality is important, that is why the price includes Showing up and sitting through dress rehersal, Checking out the sound board. Video tape the play ( minumum 5 hours including set up ). Editing the footage / cleaning up mixing the sound tracks ( 20 hours export to compressor ) finishing touches in Studio Pro and burning a disk…..
Nobody but but those in the production field knows what it takes to create a finished product.

In the past I have lost many jobs because I gave them an up front price. Even if I raise the Minimum number of DVD’s required to purchase before I would record the show. Will only result in not getting enough orders and not vidoe taping the event and then The parents will really be mad. … not because they did not order a DVD but because The Video guy never showed up to tape the event… sometimes you can’t win

So I would prefer not to base the price on units sold, but nobody wants to pay the full bill.
That is why I normally refuse to do school plays ( nobody was around to kick me , before I accepted this one )

As far as damage to the disk. I tested each disk I made and all worked fine. I know this process is VERY basic the scratch is only on the surface ( Not deep or cracking the plastic ) less than one mm wide and about 5mm long.
My process only takes 2 seconds to add to each disk ( most of the time was required to play each disk checking that the defective area alway fell in the middle of the skipped chapter.) AND Yes I know that there are many ways to get around this system….but the Casual Copier is not going to go to all that trouble

I’ve only been working on this idea for a few days, give me a little more time and I might come up with a better system. Only last week in most web fourms the resident experts claimed there were NO way to protect a DVD.
What I would really like to know is how to open the VOB files and see the raw mpeg2 data maybe by adding some “junk – data ” (in the area of the skipped chapter on the disk ) will do the same as putting a scratch on the disk. ???

    Thanks
    Joe
