You will have to do your own bit budget if you are rendering to MPEG-2 outside of Encore. Go to videohelp.com, check the tools section, and then look for a bit budgeting application, which will determine the optimum bit rate based on the duration of your video, audio, and any subtitles.
If you give Encore AVI or MOV files, it will do all the bit budgeting for you.

Burning Blu-ray to DVD media is definitely NOT up to spec in any way, shape or form.
If you want player compatibility, burn to a Blu-ray disc from Encore. Even then, some BD players are not up to date on firmware and will not play back burned BDMV without an update.
If you want the widest compatibility, look at Blu-ray replication, such as authoring in Sony Blu-print or Sonic Scenarist, and then having the Blu-ray professionally replicated. Be prepared to spend quite a bit of cash.

Encore doesn’t support VOB files.
Instead, strip the video and audio streams out of them (you can find tools to do this at videohelp.com), and then import the streams into Encore.

That has not been my experience on the Mac – I can work with h.264-encoded files from Premiere, Adobe Media Encoder, and Apple Compressor without stability problems.
Sounds like your problems may be hardware (Matrox)-specific?

WMV is a highly compressed format to begin with – what’s the format of the source video? Which application are you capturing it in?

Instead of mp3, try using an uncompressed WAV or AIFF file – you should see much better results.

Hmm…that shouldn’t be happening. What’s the audio format you’re using?

In Encore, timelines do not get rendered – only motion menus and slideshow transitions.
You should be able to play your timelines, as long as they have a video or audio clip in them. Is that what you are looking for? Or do you have motion menus that aren’t playing?
