For the past few upgrades, if you skipped one, the next one would only be 100 dollars more. If you skip two or three, still only 100 dollars more. If you want the latest features, upgrade now, the more economical way is to run your current version and upgrade later.

Mountain Lion is not a certified OS for MC5. I doubt this would work OK, but you might get away with it.

The major options that are widely in use, as far as I know them, are: Avid ISIS/Unity, Facilis Terrablock, EditShare. Then I was sort of looking into alternatives like Dynamic Drive Pool, but haven’t tested any of them. You also may want to check out Strawberry as an add on for any of them (shared project management software).
From what I have been told, if you want to share the media, you’re sort of OK with all of them, but if you want true, easy, transparent project / bin sharing, you need Avid’s systems. They are completely built for several people working within the same project at the same time. For all others, you can sort of get the same result, but you need everyone to work very disciplined.

I think you can set the master clock to 96K. May depend on attached hardware. My DeckLink Studio 2 setup doesn’t do anything but 48K. My Nitris DX system lets me choose 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96.

The Help files claim that MC/SY does in fact support 96kHz audio.

An important thing to realize is that you will have to ‘pay up’ at some point. Either you have quick access to footage without transcoding, or you have fast renders and exports. Avid MC allows you a choice. Either AMA for direct access (may require fast CPU and drives), or transcode immediately after access. Flexibility is key.

If you own MC6 or SY6, you own a Sorensen Squeeze license.

Don’t use the QT encoder. If you set Custom QT export options in Media Composer, you will be using it. Export Same-As-Source or QT Ref and use Sorensen Squeeze to create something that fits your delivery format.

The 492 EUR includes VAT, that’s around a 20% difference that is not caused or determined by Avid. In a lot of countries, small business can get that VAT back. So the actual price is close, if you take into account the exchange rate over the past few months.

There’s one way to find out, and that is to check which BNC from the snake is plugged into the router, and which input on the monitor the router is feeding. That’s my point. If you’re not 1000% sure that the connection is correct, you will never know if the problem is in the card or after it.
