Timeline is set to 720p60 (there isn’t even a setting for 720p30). I also have a 720p ProRes timeline that does the same thing. They’re both 960 flavor 720 HD. I haven’t tried 1280 yet.

Source material is irrelevant too — it can be from 720p30 or interlaced SD upconverted.

But…

If I change the video playback to 8 bit 1080i 29.97, it does the downconvert just fine.

Having this very issue with DVCProHD 720p30 footage through HD Extreme 2 to SD monitor. Any solutions?

Not entirely on point, but perhaps applicable.

My Sony plasma is tied to my Mac Mini via DVI. QuickTime movies play full screen on the plasma which has a native resolution of 1280×720. I’ve played 720p movs (H264) without problem. 1080 stuff scales and plays, though with frame-dropping limited by the speed of the Mini and it’s drive. I have not used my Mini with FCP… yet. Obviously, uncompressed output is more demanding on the system, but the display out should be comparable. The key thing here is that the image scales and displays fine.

I would guess that as FCP is a QT app, playing out via desktop view option should be possible. For that matter, if the second Radeon card isn’t up to the task, you could always use the DVI output from the main card, and use the second card for the less demanding browser display, no?

To answer your questions:

We have two Xsans. One with 45 clients, the other with 29. We also have two Xserves connected to each Xsan as client/AFP fileservers. So, any of the 200+ PCs and Macs connected to our public network can see the media and data on the two Xsans. Each Xsan has four qLogic 5200 switches, for a grand total of 128 fibre ports. The qLogic switches are a very good value.

No, Telestream’s import utility brings IMX/XDCAM files in directly via GigE. You can hook up an XDCAM player via SDI and capture using the IMX codec in FCP5 for normal capture. While it’s not truly native, the encoding is very, very good, and compatible with native files brought in via Telestream’s solution. We typically use OLRT as our offline editing codec, and now IMX as our online codec. Telestream will need to find a way to bring in the low-res proxies with proper cataloging for their import mechanism to have application for us. We’re optimistic they’ll make it work.

Our workflow basically uses the inherent strengths of the Mac OS for cataloging of all media. By keeping thing s in plain-english, our folders and filenames make it easy for editors to import what they need to their projects, and make other applications like logging, graphics, and producer review relative simple.
