You can get a pdf of the BTH1390Y at this URL:
    https://dev.technostation.com/user-guide-owners-manual/Panasonic/PANASONIC+BTH1390Y

I have two of them, and they are great for standard and 16×9 NTSC and PAL, SMPTE and Beta 00 and Beta 7.5 levels, cross pulse, blue only,750 lines, etc.

    Worth saving.

John or others, When you downconvert from the one AJA system to another, HD to SD via SDI, what is the aspect ratio you use for the SD out of the first system? 16×9 Letterbox, anamorphic, crop? Does the second system automatically conform to the aspect ratio you send it? I am tending to go the the 2 system hardware route, but would also like opinions on software solutions. There seems to be some differences of opinion. Would love to hear some workflow stories all the way to DVD including codecs. Am thinking I will be transcoding EX1 footage to ProRes, edit, convert with the two systems to SD ProRes and then Compressor to DVD, MPEG2, I beleve at the moment, unless there is a better way. Unfortunately, some of these DVD’s will probably be played on older 4×3 monitors. It is for the Hawaii state Public Library system. The ones with budgets, the state legislature also getting it, will probably be 16×9 HD capable, but our contract states SD DVD’s.

I’m getting ready to do a downconverted HD to SD SDI LHi out to an ioHd SDI in for a DVD. Did most of you do it letterboxed? (My preference) Good results?

Absolutely. By coincidence I just received this from Boris-FCP to Avid:

To tell the truth, I’d love to be able to go the other way. I really like the Avid interface, but their hardware and support comes at a high price, and frankly, I think AJA does a better job with free support and better hardware for the dollar. I speak from a certain amount of experience, having been the exclusive Avid dealer in Hawaii for better than 5 years, in the mid 90’s, when you could actually make some money selling Avid’s in places other than Hollywood and NYC.

However, I just did a stage show job where it was very easy to see noise levels. XDcam EX transcoded both to ProRes HQ an Avid DNxHD (and the X version as well), and the ProRes HQ beat them both. I like ProRes. And I don’t see Avid going to AJA. Composer 5 is a nice bit of software though. Obviously great media management. Perhaps they are getting the clue. XML export to FCP and Media 100 Suite 1.6.1 would be great for me, though.

In short, I hope Apple has the sense to really match their hardware and OS X with a full blown version of FCP Studio. Someone needs to create the content for this iMania. It would serve Apple well if it was on their platform with their software.

And back on topic, I have ordered a new Mac Pro and for someone who has been suffering on a G5 Quadcore PCIe, it will be a welcome day when it arrives.

It is possible to come in SDI from the EX to ioHD SDI in, to ProRes live. So I have been told. Then you stay all digital.

By general, I mean more noise on the Avid through all low to mid-range luminance/chrominance video. Same monitor, same calibration. Naturally, noise is not visibly different in the high luma ranges. That is why I want to be sure I am doing the XDCam import at the best possible quality. I must admit, I am very picky. I’ve been looking at video quality for almost 40 years professionally, as an engineer and producer, and many wouldn’t notice the difference. Love the Avid interface, BTW. Far superior. Any way to export XML timelines?

Perhaps, but it seems very general. Definitely seeing the difference in the low to mid luminance levels. BTW I have no predisposition about Avid. I was their dealer here in Hawaii for six years. I am just seeing a difference in noise levels that I would like to account for. The XDcam just looks better in FCP and Media 100 Suite, at least here. BTW, where are the scopes on the MC5?

Thanks! That was the setting I was looking for. It has been a while since I’ve used a Media Composer.

But i have another question for another thread now regarding the DNxHD compression quality.
