September 9, 2014 at 4:44 pm in reply to: Upgrading from R12

    Glad to help.

    From X-Particles.com’s “News” page:

    1. The Standard version of X-Particles has been discontinued from May 22nd 2014 and is no longer available for sale. Therefore in V3, there will be no Standard version. The Professional and Floating Licence versions will, of course, continue.

    2. From V3 onwards X-Particles will 64-bit only – that is, no 32-bit version will be produced.

    3. V3 will no longer be available for CINEMA 4D R13. By the time of release R13 will be three years out of date, and the effort required to support it is way out of proportion to the number of people buying XP to use with R13.

As far as I can tell, Maxon resellers like Toolfarm only sell upgrades from 13, 14, and 15 to R16. There does not seem to be any way to purchase an upgrade for R12, but perhaps you should contact Maxon directly in case they do offer such a thing. If they do, I would strongly suspect that you will need to upgrade to R16 and would not have the option of any intermediate upgrades. As far as X-Particles is concerned, if you’re not already aware of it, their upcoming versions will no longer support R13 so it might be a good time to bite the bullet and not only upgrade your OS, but purchase R16 as well. If you plan on eventually purchasing R16 anyway, why not avoid multiple upgrades and get the latest and greatest?

    Hope this helps.

It’s unfortunate that your college did not ensure that you developed a demo reel, and that you didn’t collect samples of your projects in school and elsewhere. At this point you have a piece of paper supposedly certifying your competence but no evidence of it. You need to look for an intern position where you can start at the bottom (as most must eventually do), learn from those with experience, and develop a reel along the way. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, but without a demo reel you are expecting someone to offer you something other than an entry-level position on the basis of your positive attitude alone. Even with a demo reel no one is going to hire you as an editor or producer until you have proven yourself ready under the tutelage of an experienced mentor. Unfortunately entry-level positions are rarely *not* low paying and menial… at least for the short term.

Good luck with your career. Stick with it and you’ll fulfill your passion.

If you prefer to own your apps rather than rent them, you can still find CS6 for sale on ebay and elsewhere.

FXFactory Pro is free to demo, so you can try any and all of the plug-ins before purchasing, and they have tutorials for all the plug-ins on their site. They essentially work like any other plug-in: add the effect and modify it to your liking. As far as creating your own plug-ins for FXFactory is concerned I would suggest contacting them directly.

Personally I have found it to be an excellent set of plug-ins itself, and have been very happy with all of the “aftermarket” additions I have purchased for it (Nodes, MoType, Volumetrix, etc.). Give it a try and see what you think.

June 5, 2014 at 9:02 pm in reply to: CS6/Mavericks compatibility issues?

    Hi Mike,

I use Mt. Lion myself with AE CS6 so I can’t offer any direct experience with Mavericks, but I do know from others who have upgraded that in order to avoid crashes you will need the AE 11.0.3 (or later) update. Unless you have a specific need to upgrade to Mavericks – ie., other apps you need to run that require it – I would suggest staying with your current stable setup. Why mess with a good thing if you don’t absolutely need to?

I’m on CS6, but I assume it’s the same for your version. In the Render Queue it will show your designated file path when you twirl open the Output Module.

Before I steer you any further wrong by only going off my limited memory, have you watched the “How to use text with transform” training video at greyscalegorilla? In it Nick covers using model mode and the connect object to clean up the geometry of the chunks. Hope that helps.

When adjusting the thickness parameter use a negative value so that the thickness is added INSIDE the object/text/logo rather than on the outside, which I think is what you mean by “bloated out.” Hopefully I am understanding you correctly.
