I can’t see how ALL of that was real paint, some definitely – rent the land of a council estate that’s about to be knocked down for a day, fair enough.

But some of that close up stuff didn’t even look real, some of it must be VFX, no?

Very impressive though, don’t get me wrong!

Or use animation>keyframe assistants>convert audio to keyframes?

For shaking/movement to particular elements of the music (the bassline for instance) you’d be better having separate audio tracks and syncing them up and using the ones you want.

October 16, 2006 at 2:55 pm in reply to: PS gradients? Banding like mad on B/cast monitor…

So in CS2 16bit fully supports everything that 8bit does? Top.

And just to clarify – If I just make up my grads in 16bpc for now and then slot them into an 8bpc file that’d work better then? (ie: I have no real reason to work totally in 16bpc at the mo, so as long as just my grads are made that way and imported in 8bit it should work ok yeah? No real benefits in working 16bpc if I’m ending up 8bit in the end anyway?

And the red/green artifacts – are you saying I SHOULD be seeing them in my broadcast monitor but not on my PC? Is that normal?

    Thanks again Richard.

    Add-on…

Plus it seems a bunch of filters don’t work in PSCS1 when in 16bit mode? Is this improved in CS2 do you know? Should be upgrading to that soon.

    Thanks very much.

I think it needs to be an AI aswell, not EPS. Also, you can’t just pull a pixel-based file (JPEG, etc) into Illustrator and then save it out again as a Vector file..A vector file needs to be created as mathmatical data, rather than pixel data. You can do this by tracing an image and re-building it with vector shapes/pen tool in Photoshop then importing into Illust, or by similar (and more simple) process in Illustrator.

Hi Richard, thanks for that – it kind of worked, but I am still getting a bit of banding and some random colours (reds, greens) on a dark grey>black grad..even in 16bit. Annoying!

Comparing identical 8bit & 16bit comps the 16 is a touch smoother, but still not right. It only really happens when the grad is very subtle. Black to white is OK for instance. The noise fix helps, but like I say, doesn’t always eliminate these random colours and also needs to be applied quite heavily to cut out all the banding, in which case I’ve got a VERY grainy picture, which is not always what my client might want.

Are there any other fixes for this? My old Quantel Paintbox creates an identical gradient no problem…how does this work so differently when their technology is 15 years old!?! (It’s a pile of junk otherwise btw..which is why I use PS now!)

One other thing – are there any other benefits to me working in 16bpc? Only it doubles my file sizes and we are still only currently work with 8bit video (upgrades soon hopefully) Can I use 16bit PS files to trans to 8bit video, or to 8bit AFX projects? 16bit AFX will drastically reduce my speed..

Thanks for your adivce thus far.

    Jim.

Don’t know about the “super run” thing (?) but to create letters coming towards the camera and exploding you want to use the ‘shatter’ effect in AE. Do a search on it and you’ll find plenty – you can also make very simple 3D text using shatter.
