Well, we were (and are) using a networked 10GbE RAID for footage….however from memory the 3 x 1TB SATA RAID got about the same throughput as our network (250mbps roughly)

This is enough to capture 1080 uncompressed 10bit QTs through a decklink. Will also let you edit a couple of streams of this. R3D 4k also good for editing with – but I suspect alot of the work being done to run that is from my Quadro card using OpenCL. This is an important addition for PPro these days. You are limited on options with the 2008 (3,1) Mac Pro, but Quadro 4000 runs fine on mine. Cheaper alternative is the GTX680.

EDIT: The SATA SSD scratch I have now is actually about 270MB r/w not 450+!….I was getting mixed up with a new Mac Pro we are testing at the moment, which is getting an insane 750MB+ from the internal Flash SSD!

    Decklink Extreme+ 3D / 1TB SSD scratch / 6TB XServe + UD RAID on 10GbE

  • Quick update from my end…

Borrowed a 6-core nMP for testing and PProCC2014.1 working on 10.9.2 and 10.9.5. Gpu with d500’s is flying and managed to get 5 x 4k r3d streams running at once off the internal ssd (hlf res) with grading applied. Also a couple of uncompressed 1080 qt’s running no problem at full res with a tonne of blurs and cc applied. Rendering out looks fine too.

    Testing with yosemite tomorrrow…

I previously had a standard sata for system/apps, then media/projects on a fast network raid (10GbE) then scratch/previews drive was a 3 drive sata internal raid-0. That got about 250mbps. Now have two internal SSDs for sys/scratch and getting about 450mb+ Each

…apparently not if you have a 2013 mac pro!

Everyone at our office has had somesort of problem with Mavericks..hopefully Yosemite is more solid.

Anyone know if yosemite will add firmware to enable nMP’s HDMI port to meet v2.0?

  • Thanks for the heads up Brian.

Definitely not an option to switch off GPU acceleration!…main reason going for the upgrade! Do you know what the last stable version of mavericks is that will run PPro CC2014?

Also, as a side – i wonder if you could share any thoughts you have on the performance difference in PPro/other adobe video apps between the new 8 & 12core? Trying to decide if worth the extra £££

    Thanks,
    James

  • Hi all,

Glad I spotted this…just about to order an 8-core MacPro and we rely very heavily on PPro CC2014 (latest .1 release)

    Has this issue been resolved?

Also – if anyone has any thoughts or experience on scratch drive set up on the nMP I’d love to hear….I currently have media running on a big RAID via 10GbE and then internal SSD for system, then another internal SSD for scratch…As new MP only supports one internal drive, I’m curious as to whether the new ‘super fast PCIe SSD’ is fast enough to do both?

    Thanks,
    James

    Hi Kevin,

Basically PPro2014 doesn’t seem to be able to read AVC h264’s. I just get a green screen. But in quicktime, vlc and ppro CC they work just fine. Odd.

I’m on 2014.0.1 and the h264 problem is very much an issue unfortunately. Had to transcode and relink 100 clips to get a workable edit again.

I won’t mention that Premiere CC 2014 has crashed my machine 17 times today already 🙁

Thanks for the advice guys, but this lack of back save is insane!

I’ve got fx and titles galore in this one so XML / AAF will not work unfortunately.

The only reason I’m wanting to backsave is this bug in 2014 with certain flavours of h264. Looks like a transcode of ALL my files is the only way and then relink them all.

    Oh dear lord
