  • Cheers Filip! That is a good way to do it within after effects, could be useful if I’m feeling lazy 😛

  • Thank you Daniel! Hadn’t any idea about that script, that should be quite handy 🙂

  • A great solution Kevin! Thank you for delving deep into the quick and easy, just the sort of thing I was after. I’ll give it a go!

It’s a very long time after you commented this but I just noticed it in my inbox. The video was finally completed after a loooong time!

I ended up getting access to a license of boujou which is a very impressive program in the 3D space. I then used a plugin to convert its data to AE camera tracker data and was able to place the items in the scene that way.

Boujou was quick and efficient which was exactly what the client needed budget wise but boy oh boy was it still arduous. I’d often have to use many pre-processing techniques just to make the footage 3D trackable. All in all though I would recommend boujou if it weren’t worth $3200 AUD…

    Here’s the finished project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-lIDa_bX9s

Tracks are smooooth all things considered! But the project became so infinitely difficult to work in because of 6K trapcode particular so I wish I could’ve taken more creative liberty than I did but alas, it’s still pretty good I think 🙂

Thanks for your interest, I’m sure you’ve forgotten about this though haha.

    Cheers,

    Jesse

  • Well that’s good to know definitively.
At least in this context clipping isn’t overly noticeable, movement would only seem weird if you really focused.

Alas, thank you for your response!
    Cheers,
    Jesse.

  • I might be dumb, I’m just trying a method now where I make two systems, one for in front one for behind, which have limited z positions on their producers. There still may be a better way to do it so please let me know if there is but just thought I’d update you.

    Hi everyone,
    thanks for your responses.

Dave, I didn’t but I’ve been on many-a-set where that, even jokingly, becomes final say. It’s quite interesting because the film maker’s need to make things easier and more time efficient for themselves often leads to their own vision becoming difficult or impossible to enact. This however might be a case of them unfortunately not having much information on what they should do for VFX handy. Any more ideas on different hand tracking techniques? It’d be amazing to be able to set up even a simple 3D camera because there is supposed to be quite a bit of animation, and I just want to be able to work freely in a 3D space.

Kalleheikki, Such a technique of tracking I’m afraid might not fit in the clients budget haha but I can bring all this up. Also I’ve tried some de-flicker like effects however I’m afraid it won’t do too well since the flashing alternates between left and right of frame. So that means it’s not a uniform flicker. That being said what’s the best de-flicker technique in after effects?

Martin, thank you for your interest. I’ve sent you an email containing a short cut together of all the clips. Hope you have better luck with it than I have!

Thank you all again, I’m new to this forum and am so impressed at everyone’s willingness to help out. You all seem like a bunch of really passion driven problem solvers, this has to be consistently the best and most helpful community I’ve seen!

    Cheers,
    Jesse.
