December 7, 2017 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Background tasks (render) never end/requires force quit

Another quick follow up. I realize I should probably already know this. -)
    1) In the process of moving my files to the new drive (and also renaming the folder), I see that I now have TWO different folders with “fcpcache” and “fcpbundle” files for this current project.
    2) Is that part of my problem?
    3) And will it mess things up if I manually combine all of these files (for same project) into one folder?

    Thanks again, Jerry

Hi, Noah. Thanks for your kind reply.
    – On my external HD, I have a folder with the project name. (I have a few other folders also on this HD, with different projects, different names.)
    – In that folder are the “MST.fcpbundle” files. Several.
    – That is the folder that I recently moved from another external to my new HD. (Needed more space.)
    – I also changed the name of that folder just to help me organize my projects better on my external HD. (I realize this is probably not the most wise thing to do mid-project.)
    – For whatever reason, now when I open the project in FCPX, it attempts to render the dotted lines – but it just spins, never completes the background tasks. And when I try to close the project, it will not shut down. Requires a force close.
    NOTE:
    – Each time I open the project, it finds the project and plays the files fine. Nothing appears to be lost.
    – Maybe it has something to do with not being able to locate the previous render files. Not sure.
    – Is there a way to resync or reconnect all my files?

What would you do if you were in my shoes?
    Thanks again, Jerry

  • It is an external drive. I agree, that may be part (or all) of the issue. I will do more experimenting.

    Thanks much. Jerry

  • Thanks, Joe. Appreciated. Good to know that there is at least the possibility for it to load much faster. I have not tried turning off waveform yet. Will try both that – and creating it as a Library rather than a Event.

  • Thanks, Bret. Appreciated. If I create it (Stock) as a Library and not an event, is the time to load about the same as when it is an Event? I’m just trying to figure out if it is even a workable idea. In my perfect world, I would be able to get access to all of my stock – but without taking forever to load each time I open FCPX. Maybe that is just a pipe dream! ☺

As best I can tell, it is not corrupted. Because it does actually load. But it may take up to 5 hours or so to do so.

My total stock library is 278 gig. (Actually, I have two stock libraries. But the one I was trying to open is 278.)

Maybe that is just more than what FCPX is built for.

    Thanks again, Jerry

Hi, Oliver. Thanks for your kind reply. I’m not certain his camera model, but is a fairly new Canon. But the format is MTS from his card.

Yes, the script is based on his camera timecode. He has given me a paper shot log on the clips he wants to use, order of those clips, etc. – all based on his timecode.

I just got “Any MP4 MTS Converter” – but have not yet used it. Maybe it will resolve my issues. How do you do this to preserve timecode from camera?

A related question. When I am able to see his timecode in FCPX Browser, but then drop clip to my timeline, I lose his timecode. It there a way in FCPX to keep both the timeline timecode and his original camera timecode?

    Thanks again.

  • I actually created an event. Maybe that is my problem. Still learning the FCPX way of doing things. (Was thinking that the Event is the “folder” where I would be keeping the stock footage.)

  • John, no worries. And I am continuing to benefit from the kind and helpful posts you have spent considerable time providing. It is helping me continue to soak in all of the new ways to think. Appreciated.

  • Hi, Jacob. Have not totally punched out! ☺ Just hitting some deadlines. But I concur with John and others that Ripple is very helpful. There are a few others out there (i.e. Izzy) who has some pretty helpful stuff. But Ripple is pretty hard to beat.

I’m just sometimes slow to make major changes in how I think. But the info in this thread has been extremely helpful in getting my head wrapped around it. All the best in your project.
