February 25, 2014 at 4:59 pm in reply to: After Effects interprets 23.976 incorrectly? dropping 3rd decimal?Thanks Walter, you’re right and the key thing I missed is that 23.976 triggers AE to automatically move to a 24fps timebase, which is exactly as it should be. So media duration as measured in TC becomes the same in 23.976 and 24fps, but actual duration is different, several minutes different in a 90 minute project. I guess that part of it is relatively new, but a good thing as it eliminates TC variations. thanks

Thanks for looking into it. I need to capture 3D video from a Sony 3D camera that currently has no software decoding available, meaning 3D video can only be used via capture from the HDMI out of the camera. The BMD Extreme card can capture frame-packed 3D via HDMI. I need to do this in the field from a laptop, so I was hoping I could do the same thing using the Intensity. My only other option as far as I know would be to use an laptop connected to PCI Express box with a BMD Extreme in it. If anyone knows of a way to do this with an Intensity or from any capture card that will work in a laptop, please let me know. Thanks! -Jerome

Thanks Tom, I see the Source TC in the viewer window, but oddly enough when I export directly from the viewer I get a clip with NO TC. Any ideas?

Sounds like you may be having the same problem as me and at least a few others… if you search CC for “multiprocessor render problems” you should find another thread about it. Appears that it’s exactly that… only work around I’ve heard is to not use multiprocessor render (in prefs). I’m theorizing that the number of frames before gamma shift is related to the number of cpus, as my 4 core machine does it 3 frames in while others with 8 cores have reported 14 frames in… Some have said that the problem went away with 8.01 upgrade of AE, but mine persists through the last several QT upgrades and the one AE upgrade. Post here if you find a better answer as I’m rendering hours and hours of footage that really benefits from MP.

April 16, 2008 at 9:37 pm in reply to: Footage gets darker after 14 frames during renderI have the same problem too… but my QT footage (DVCProHD, HDV, whatever) gets darker after 3 frames. I found another post that had narrowed it down to using multi-processor render, which I use a lot. So I think the discrepancy between my 3 frames and others 14 frames have to do with the number of CPUs… just a hunch. In any case, has anyone found a fix? I’ve just updated to QT 7.4.5, problem remains. Thanks-

sure, there are lots of scenarios that would cause AE to slow down to 24 hrs for 10 mn of footage. My point is that intraframe compression alone wouldn’t be one of those scenarios.

Ok, sorry if I jumped the gun and came off harshly. In fairness, you didn’t specify why switching codecs would help. It’s true that intra-frame compression will slow things down, both reading from and writing to, but in my experience with HDV there’s no way that would account for 10 mn of footage taking 24 hrs, even on an ancient system. Or am I missing something…

Keep in mind that changing the codec of source media in AE will have zero affect on the amount of RAM used. That’s not how AE (or any other system) works. AE loads media into it’s uncompressed 8, 16 or 32 bit 4:4:4 work space. Therefore a more compressed source doesn’t mean less data for AE to process. (And animation codec is less compressed than HDV anyway!) The best way to reduce memory requirements is to use proxies that are lower resolution. For your final render you’ll have to switch to full-res, so that would only save you time/RAM while working, not on your final render. At the risk of sounding harsh, I think you should study up before giving such poor advice.

I’m running several Kona 3 systems on MacPro’s with windows and indeed, you can install Xena drivers and the card shows up, even sends bars from AE. In Machina you can even step through video, but not play back in realtime. Techs at Aja have indeed confirmed to me that the Kona will not be fully functional as a Xena card under windows until Bootcamp is out of beta. Hopefully that will be soon!

Thanks, good to know. And how do you get two sets of component outputs from Kona 3, or are you using a splitter or DA? I guess using component outputs will bypass the 8-bit limitation inherent in HDMI as well.
