Most likely, they’re contacts. If I remember correctly, there wasn’t much done in the way of CG on that film.

    GREAT flick though 🙂

Ah, so the “Sin City” effect. I’d recommend the garbage matte approach, personally.

I forget what the Effect is (motion tile, maybe?) but Kramer uses it in his Room/Text tutorial. Basically, what I would do is make the film strip and then use the motion tile to have it actually go on forever. Then you could say move it 100% of the height backwards and it would look like it did when it started.

    Does that make sense?

Hmm… I’ll give that shot. Probably should’ve thought of that.

Are you using a 3D camera? If so, Depth of Field could be the criminal. I know that’s happened to me before.

I had a nested comp that I moved in 3D space and could not for the life of me figure out why it was blurry, turns out the Focus Distance on the Camera was set farther back than the video screen was in Z space so it blurred.

Trapcode’s Sound Keys plugin sounds like it would do the trick if you have the budget for it.

Actually, I think it might work well if you show them starting to cut, then show their face grimacing or whatever, then have a shot of them continuing to cut with the makeup, etc applied as blood. It won’t give you your cut and bleed shot, but it might be as effective.

You’re better off shooting it with makeup and such, it’s going to look a lot better that way. After effects is an amazing tool, but when you can achieve an effect without it, it’s almost always going to look better.
