Is it worth selling the Areca 1882xi 4GB SAS Raid card to keep all three GPUs in 16x?

Thanks Rohit. If I move my cards that’s the plan, keep the GUI in 16x and the CUDAs in 8x. The problem is I have everything in 16x right now but my Areca raid card won’t fit because it hits the north ridge heatsink on the motherboard. So I have a choice….sell the raid card and find a shorter smaller one, or move the cards out of their preferred slots.
My primary clients have both an Epic and Scarlet camera, so I will be working in 4-5K all the time and other clients have often asked for 4K deliveries. Am I going to run into performance issues with the CUDAs in 8x and should I just sell the raid card?

Thx Juan. Good point about the cubix. I hadn’t thought about it that way. It’s a lot of re-cabling but I may try it this weekend. Thx.

Well I’m still in process sadly. Turns out when you buy bleeding edge cpus they are hard to cool. I’m on my fourth set of heatsinks. Here’s to hoping these work. Should be another week or two before I have it all stress tested and all 3 GTX 680s in there. I will let ya know. Thx.

Thanks, that’s what I’m hoping. Bought 3 of them today (1 for GUI and 2 for GPUs). Ended up buying the Galaxy GTX 680 4GBs due to their custom coolers reported to be quieter than the competition. Bought a board that should be able to utilize all three cards at full 16x bandwidth on PCIe 3.0 slots. Hoping for the best.

Hey Rohit. Im about to pull the trigger in my workstation. I missed my window to buy some 580s and now I have to get used or pay over $600 for the 3GB versions. I’m thinking of just buying three GTX 680s with 4GB of ram each and hoping for the best. Any new performance comparisons or benchmarks in Resolve with 680s? Hoping the 4GBs will get them a bit closer to the 580s.

I’m torn…I can get the new 680 4GB for $20 more than the 580 3GB. Soo 3×580 3GBs or 3×680 4GBs on Windows for Resolve, After Effects, & Premiere work? Would the 4GBs of memory each bring the performance closer to the 580s?

Yeah those numbers seem realistic to me. I’m getting 560MBs tops off my 8 drive external SAS connected to an old ATTO R380 in a 4x slot instead of 8x.
Most of my color grading deliverables lately have been at 4K recently. Plus when I’m doing my Motion Graphics work your talking about sometime over 100 layers in AE with 5-8 of those being 1080P to 3K video sequences. So the faster the better.
I just would really like to have a smaller system footprint with the 6 drives instead of the behemoth tower that will be required with the larger array. But I don’t want to be stuck with only 6 drives and no upgrade room and regret it I suppose.

That’s what I thought as well when I heard and saw the benchmark at NAB this year. Part of me wonders if they had the cacheing enabled on their AJA benchmark tool. I plan to copy their setup exactly but probably with 8 drives. So we shall see.

I will be using a Areca ARC-1882IX-12 6Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID Adapter with 4GB of cache in a PCIe 3.0 full 16X slot. The same setup that ProMax uses for their ProMax One. They get around 1200MBs off of 6 drives in RAID 5.
