Got it. I’m still having some challenges getting the flyby to achieve that quick-in, slow-out effect exactly as I’d like it but I’m working on it and mean to get it right. As I say, as a newb, it requires some thinking and finessing to get it exactly as I’d like it, but I’m making progress and all thanks to your invaluable advice. Kudos for your knowledge and generosity.

Okay, I’ve tried the 3D layer and camera…and fear I must be too much of a simpleton to grasp the concept. When I turn the layer into 3D and right click on the layer itself, I get a drop down with Camera showing just above Pre-compose.

    Selecting Camera, the choices are:

Create Stereo 3D Rig (an unwanted simulation of 3D glasses)
Create Null Object (grayed out and don’t work)
Link Focus Distance to Point of Interest (grayed out and don’t work)
Link Focus Distance to Layer (ask for a second layer)
Set Focus Distance to Layer (ask for a second layer)

The Camera Tool itself seems to have no effect, though I’m sure it’s because I’m doing something wrong. Sorry to be such a newbie. Hope you’ll be gracious enough to clarify. Thanks again!

That sounds like a good solid method, as well. My thanks!

Interesting approach! I’ll definitely try it. Many thanks!

Well, I do feel a fool. That, or my AE was just “tired” last night. This morning Import gave me the option to import a project, where last night it didn’t. So it’s all good now. The take-away is perseverance and trust in your betters. Thanks so much for sticking with me on what now seems like a most dunderheaded question.

Thanks for the reply! When I use Import, the only choices it provides are “as footage” or “as composition.” When I do the latter, it imports only the project’s footage as a composition while placing that footage in its own folder. The other compositions within that project are not imported, and it’s those I need. Do I have a preference set wrong? I’ve looked through them, but can’t seem to find one that applies.

  • Yes, you grasp perfectly what I’m attempting. The shape is a simple cylinder. As it explodes, its back portion shards get smaller as they receed and its front portion shards get larger as they approach the camera. As the back portion has already begun to explode by the time the eye perceives its shards, it isn’t important that it be a precise mirror of the front portion. Again, many thanks for the invaluable tips!

  • Thanks! This seems to flip the shape, which isn’t a big deal as this is the back part of an exploding figure. And the fragments do rise, which will be essential in other situations I’m working on. What I’m after in this particular case is for them to fall like their front part does (which is on a different layer) while receding from the camera. Is there a way to do that? Thanks in advance for your kind patience with a relative novice.

That was it precisely. Had no idea that sequence feature was available, nor can I imagine how I triggered it after all this time. I’ve been working on this project for almost a year, naming and importing files the same way all the while. But I’ll be vigilant from now on. You got me “unstuck.” Thank you very much indeed!
