    Oops, misread the original, thus my response. Got new trifocals last week, but sent them back due to a problem with the frames. Helps to see what I’m reading…

    So what kind of video content? Maybe the content doesn’t warrant a high bit rate as the encoder sees it? It’s going to try to be efficient in compressing the content.

    Most likely scenario is that since you are recompressing from a lower to higher bitrate, the source video being already compressed, the encoder is only using as much data as needed to re-encode the material. Encoding to a higher data rate would yield no possible increase in quality, thus the resulting low bit rate.

    What you are trying to do is similar having a text document and trying to make a new version of it that is larger, but that would be impossible without adding more words, if that makes sense.

    Just avoid delivering anamorphic, even if the source is, meaning no 1440×1080

  • What’s there to convert? Windows machines play .mov files including ProRes. Otherwise create .mp4 files which are pretty universally playable on anything.

    He is actually doing both – he wants to record Premiere’s timeline output onto a VHS tape, then capture the VHS tape back into Premiere. Trying to add the “old VHS” look to the video or so I gather.

    Print To Tape is an AUTOMATED procedure, used with timecode. For instance, printing to miniDV or DVCAM, or some Pro deck using RS-422 control. With a Firewire-to-Analog converter, should only have to play timeline and video output will come out of converter as analog in realtime. Did it for years myself. Just needs to be set up correctly, but I can’t say what those settings are anymore after so long. But definitely not using Print to Tape process.

    You know what would work, is just getting a Black Magic Intensity Pro card. Actually has analog RCA inputs and outputs, would interface directly to VHS deck both ways, without any DV conversion going on. But the Canopus should certainly work as well.

  • How many layers are we talking about here? Might be better off to export each layer as its own .psd or .png file instead. And if you number the stills sequentially, use Import as Sequence in Premiere so the stills import as a single “clip” in Premiere.

  • You should not need to do a “Print to Tape” – with gear set up correctly, just play the timeline and it should come out of the ADVC 100 as analog.

    Something I did not see mentioned was – will the laptop be the same one for the whole show? That is key. If presenters are plugging in their own laptops, then it would be difficult to have any consistent results regardless of capture method, hardware or software, too many variables.

    I have an idea – Newtek came out with a new video over IP protocol called NDI. It is free to develop for, so many vendors are now using it in their products. vMix is one of them. They have a free app for Desktop Capture, which would run on the PC laptop and output the screen as NDI video over the network. Then if you have a copy of vMix running on another computer, you select the NDI video source from laptop as an Input and choose to record it, and you’ll be able to select various recording codecs including H.264. vMix HD is just $60 and should do the trick.

    vMix offers a fully-functional 60-day free trial, so no reason not to test the workflow at least and see if it is viable.

    Note that the two computers do not need to be on the internet, or even the local network at the venue – they can be direct connected to one another with just those two machines talking to one another. Quick and easy to set that up.

    The 6700 processor came out Q3-’15, while 7700 is new this year (7th gen vs. 6th gen 6700).

    The Aspire has the newer processor plus an SSD boot drive which is very helpful to overall performance, so it has those two positives, but GPU is a step lower. However, the GPU only accelerates certain things in Premiere – overall, I believe the faster processor is going to be more beneficial than a faster GPU.

    I would go with the Acer based on specs you shared. Newer processor, SSD, and a $100 less.
