Yes, I’m rendering and previewing the correct way, (I have been using AE for 15 years now). The problem is with the Xena card. I’ve found if I render and RAM preview a comp I get very slow playback with the Xena, if I uncheck the “preview during playback” in the AJA preview panel, the same RAM preview plays back realtime, no problems, even with 1080p comps.
So I assume this is not normal behavior (I hope not anyway) so I need to find out why.
    thanks for the help,

Yes, full range is rendered. My GPU card has 768MB of RAM.
I don’t think it’s related to the GPU, since the playback goes from 7FPS to full 30FPS, by just switching the Xena output resolution from 1080i to 486i.
Tim, do you get full-speed playback in 1080i, is this a problem with my setup?
    thanks,

I think you need to switch the frequency setting in the deck, I’m almost positive you can capture VariCam through HD-SDI, but I’ve only ever loaded it through FireWire or P2 myself.
The problem is Preimere does not have a DVCPRO HD codec that will allow FireWire Capture. If you can confirm that you can’t use SDI, then maybe the MainConcept MPEG Pro HD 4 plug-in will give you FireWire capture for DVCPRO HD.

I worked with AJA tech support and they were able to reproduce the problem and confirm the bug. I don’t know if it is only LHi or all of the Xena line.

Switching to NTSC-J does not change anything. In fact switching between the 3 settings, NTSC, NTSC-J and SMPTE does not change anything, swithcing to RGB blanks out my monitor (of course) so I know something is happening.
This is a new LHi install on a system that was running a different card. Nothing has changed in the suite except the new LHi and Nvidia card. I’ve had a lot of trouble getting the Xena to work properly, and have installed and uninstalled the drivers many times over a week, turns out switching PCIe slots made all the difference.
Scope is definitely calibrated, but I will double-check everything else in suite and make sure something didn’t get switched.
    Thanks for the advice.

September 1, 2009 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Quadro cards

OK, so I got the LHi and a Quadro card up and running. I have been using ATI cards for the past few years and have not used an Nvidia in a while.
The problem I am having is with the Nview software, it does not seem to work with hardly any applications, and certainly not CS4.
Is anyone out there using a Quadro FX card on Vista with 2 monitors? I can’t seem to get CS4 apps to open full screen (covering both monitors) without having to hand stretch the corners every time, and all the child windows open in the center between the 2 monitors. Obviously Nview is supposed to fix this, but CS4 and just about every other program seems to ignore the Nview settings.
If anyone has a workaround I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the info. guys. I will probably go with a 3000 series card, a good compromise between price & power.

  • FCP is what Avid was in the ’90s – a proprietary system with little to no variation (or soul). Our industry has always liked that, it’s really only been 20 years or so since the whole industry was proprietary with linear editing.
A lot of editors like to walk into a suite and have it look and work like every other suite they’ve been in. I guess if you are a freelance editor, that has some advantages. I own my own shop and equipment, so I never had the urge to look like the guys down the street, and my producer clients don’t seem to care.
Honestly, I would be embarrassed to run a professional business with Macs, all of those TV ads with Justin Long as the guy living in his parents basement calling the PC a nerd for having a job. To me, Apple’s message is “Hey, we’re a toy company making Ipods and Iphones”.

Sorry for the late response, this may be too late but you can select the layer you want to make a mask for and then go to layer/auto-trace. You can then select to make a static mask from a single frame or animated from a range of frames.
